BE PREPARED BEFORE IT HAPPENS. BE FABULOUS!!!! PART 2

Leanne and her daughter Maia, © Dave Fleming/UNP Have you ever heard or thought of febrile seizure and how it could affect a child? According to a survey sample of 2000 carried across the United Kingdom,  66% of parents said they had not been taught to recognize or treat febrile seizures. 65% did not know what a febrile seizure is (26% said they had heard the term but didn’t know what it is; 39% had never heard of it). When I tried to check google trend  to see if we (Nigerians) tried to search what it is, I got nothing!!! So what is the statistics of febrile seizure in Nigeria and how are parents handling it? Here is another FABulouS mum, Leanne Barnett, who decided to be proactive and learn the act of first aid for the sake of her baby. Hope you read it and learn a thing or two from this FABulouS mum: Would you be able to spot a baby or child having a febrile seizure? Two thirds of parents surveyed said they did not know what a febrile seizure was, or how to recognize

CURBING DEATHS DURING LASSA FEVER OUTBREAKS

Image
Picture source: Vanguard Newspaper THE death of two medical doctors and one nurse from Lassa fever in Ebonyi State once again highlights the need for decisive measures to strengthen the nation’s health system and proactively respond to disease outbreaks. The death of the health workers in the line of duty is particularly regrettable considering that even though there is no vaccine currently available, Lassa fever is preventable and treatable. According to the University Graduates of Nursing Science Association, UGONSA, no less than 40 health workers have died of Lassa fever in Ebonyi State over the past 13 years. It is not uncommon for healthcare workers in health facilities to be particularly at risk of contracting Lassa fever, especially where infection prevention and control, IPC, procedures are not strictly adhered to.  Humans become infected with the Lassa virus when they get exposed to urine and faeces of the carrier rodents. Person-to-person transmission also occurs

THE TICKING TIME BOMB; HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW THE HEALTH RISKS OF ECTOPIC PREGNANCIES?

Image
Blood transfusion is usually required to save women with ruptured ectopic pregnancy from shock due to massive internal bleeding. Courtesy wikimedia commons. An ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy in which a fertilized egg also known as the  embryo , attaches itself into any other parts of the female genital tract or the abdomen other than the  endometrium  or the inner  lining of the  uterus. While they can be divided into various types, based on location of the ectopic pregnancy in the female genital tract, see  DEFINITION AND TYPES OF ECTOPIC PREGNANCIES ,  they can also be divided based on presentation at the hospital into ruptured, non ruptured and slow leaking ectopic pregnancies.  Most of the complications of ectopic pregnancies are seen following an unsuspected ruptured ectopic pregnancy.  A ruptured ectopic pregnancy refers to  an ectopic pregnancy that has outstretched its confining structures resulting in a significant tear followed by sudden and massive bleedin

CHILD SAFETY: HOW SAFE IS YOUR HOME FOR LITTLE CHILDREN? (VIDEO)

Image
When I saw this video, I didn't want to watch because I was wondering about the relevance to this blog. I decided to watch and at the end, it left me silent and pondering on the dangers we have in our homes, where we have little children. We want our homes to be trendy and unique so that when visitors come around, they are very impressed. But how safe are our homes for little children? There was an event that happened in where I lived in Benin City. A little boy ran into sliding glass door during the cause of play with his siblings and friends. The outcome wasn't pleasant as the glass shattered and cut through this boy. The boy died and the mother was never the same again. So the question is: How safe is your home for little children? BE PREPARED BEFORE IT HAPPENS. BE FABULOUS!!!!

Image
Source: British Red Cross This is actually an interesting story of a proactive mum ( Rowena Vithlani ).  Who decided to obtain first aid skills after the birth of her child so that she would never have to look helpless when her child needed urgent health attention but she ended up making use of these skills to save another mother's child. A very FABulouS mum. A normal day out Rowena had been shopping with her mother in a department store, along with her five-month-old daughter. They’d stopped for coffee in the children’s section, where there were lots of mothers with their babies. Seated near their table was one mother feeding her nine-month-old baby girl some homemade food. “Given we had two little baby girls we exchanged compliments on the girls and then continued with our business,” Rowena said. Leaving her daughter with her mother, Rowena went off to buy the coffees. But while in the queue, she heard a loud commotion. Looking around, she realised it was the mo

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR KID'S HEAD IS STUCK BETWEEN BARS (VIDEO)

Image
When we were all kids, I guess we all tried and believed we could pass through all types of tight spaces we saw (I did it and it was fun when been chased by an adult). But like you know and I know, sometimes we sometimes get stuck and all hell was let loose at home, until we were brought out. With that said, do you think today's kids won't still attempt to do same (go through tight spaces)? Looking at the video from CCTV+ , as parents, aunties, uncles, teachers or guardians, what would you? Cry, panic or keep threaten the kid or call our Fire Service as was case of the video or apply the simple trick (using just a rod and a strong rope) shown on  Fire Fighting  YouTube channel? Remember to keep the child calm during the ordeal. #BePrepared #GetFirstAidSkills #GetAFirstAidKit/Box #BeFABulouS

KNOWLEDGE IS EVERYTHING-GET INFORMED

Image
Show more reactions I came across this post on Facebook wall of  Tayo Adelaja and felt it was worth sharing. It is very sad indeed  😥  when we leave our kids in school with their teachers and the school management,we pray and hope they know what they to do during crisis, medical emergencies and are equipped to do the needful. Can they identify the symptoms of common ailments? Do they know when the situation calls for a health care professional medical intervention? I hope to write a post on children injuries and how to prepare for their eventual occurrence and what we can do to prevent them from occurring. We all have to be proactive for the safety and health of all our children.  How Louis Ville Girls’ Secondary School , Gwagwalada Abuja Killed My Daughter Please read and share till Kamzie gets justice. It all happened at Louis Ville Girls’ Secondary School Gwagwalada, Abuja on 2nd October, 2017. According to eyewi

MOM SHARES HORRIFIC INJURIES HER DAUGHTER SUSTAINED DURING A SCHOOL TRIP, NARRATES HOW THE TEACHERS NEGLECTED HER.

A Mom, Monica Jefferson took to her Facebook page to share photos of the horrific injuries her daughter sustained while on a school trip and also accused the teachers of neglecting her child. She wrote; This is not something I will like to post. But It so crazy how nobody in this world think this is not bad. I really don't understand why. Cause if I would have done this too my child in sent her to school DCFS would have been at my door talking about we here to take your kids. But instead it happen at school. My baby go on a sledding trip with her school in. Nobody call me and let me know how she hurt her face or what was going on with my baby face at all. But I get a call from a outsider about what happened to my baby face. The school didn't call me or the principal didn't call. They make it back at the school in Time for lunch. So I go up to the school cause I have received this picture of my baby face to talk too the principal and what they tell me is

SUPER GONORRHEA IS SPREADING: WHAT'S ORAL SEX GOT TO DO WITH IT

Image
Not all sore throats are strep throat. In fact most aren't. Here's one throat infection that can be mistaken for strep throat. (Photo: Shutterstock) You never want to see the words "gonorrhea" and "super" in the same sentence, such as "super, you have gonorrhea" or "gonorrhea is super." However, "super" gonorrhea is becoming an increasing reality around the world. Super gonorrhea is not the next DC Comics television show or movie, like Superman or Supergirl . It is a sexually transmitted bacteria, Neisseria gonorrhoeae,  that is resistant to most if not all the antibiotics that we have available. A slang term for gonorrhea is "the clap"...but no one is clapping about the around 78 million new gonorrhea infections that occur each year. As a just-released World Health Organization (WHO) report explains , "data from 77 countries show that antibiotic resistance is making gonorrhea–a common sexual
