CHILD SAFETY: OUR HOMES HAVE MORE POISONOUS SUBSTANCES THAN WE REALIZE

Image
Source: Max Pixel I had a friend who told me how her last child mistakenly drank Dettol liquid. She immediately went into panic mode (as you would expect of a mother). She had to ensure her child drank some palm oil to neutralize any possible effect(African first aid, lol). But what is the best way to handle such unexpected events. You first have to understand that children knowledgeable enough to distinguish between what is actually healthy and harmful. They copy what adults do yet not knowing the reason we do them or where to draw the line when taking seemingly risky acts. Remember the scene in Home Alone 1, where Macaulay Culkin's character (Kelvin) used his father's shaving cream. He screamed because of the sensation he felt. He (Kelvin) didn't understand that the actual use of the shaving foam. He just wanted to behave like his dad. Without proper supervision, a  child can pick up any liquid and ingest it. What poisons are in our homes that can be harmful t...

THE GOOD SAMARITAN LAW

Image
Source: Pixabay Ok, you still feel reluctant to help victims/casualties because your fear of the police and your strong suspicions of sinister motives are too strong to be ignored. You should therefore be aware of the Good Samaritan Law. According to The Nation newspaper of 26th June, 2016, a bill was presented at the National House of Representative know as the Good Samaritan Bill. The promoter of the bill is Hon. Jimi Benson and he was quoted as saying: The bill seeks to give citizens the ability to help one another in emergency situations by rendering emergency care without the worry of being sued. Considering that a good Samaritan in legal terms refers to someone who renders aid in an emergency to an injured person on a voluntary basis, the bill intends to provide legal basis for such selfless assistance. Though a volunteer comes to the aid of an injured or ill person (stranger) without pecuniary compensation or reward, the person giving the aid owes the stranger a d...

GIRL RESUSCITATES HER BROTHER BY PERFORMING CPR (VIDEO)

Image
Source: Linda Ikeji's Blog Finally, I found the video of the girl who was videoed performing CPR (Obviously this was her first time performing CPR) on her brother who had collapsed. With her mom and possibly her mom’s friend guiding her on what to do over the phone on CPR procedure. This must have been one of the most terrifying and stressful assignment for her to perform. However,it was a life and death issue. Words cannot describe how she felt doing it or was able to perform this, but she did and saved the day,an avoidable death was prevented. #AFABulouSSister! She performed the hands only procedure, although she did not exactly get it done as recommended, but the outcome was good. Check CPR procedures on my blog. Be equipped with the skill and the kit! You never know when a loved one or a stranger would collapse in your presence, it could end up been a disaster if you don't know what to do. But undergoing a first aid training and practice with a professional ...

COMPLACENCY, THE REASON FOR MOST FIRE ACCIDENTS IN NIGERIA. (OPINION)

Image
This was a video of the gas explosion at Magodo as reported by Channels TV. This happened about 3 weeks ago . From what was said by the fire service official, the fire was caused by a smoking car who refused to listen to instruction that was being given out by their officials. This has now led to the loss of lives, properties and the suspension  of a business. There was also a story last year of a lady who died after an explosion at an LPG filling station at Osogbo, Osun state. The reason for the explosion was that she answered a call at the LPG station. The real reason for the cause of these fire accidents, if you ask me, is COMPLACENCY . You are driving and you notice fire service officials and their fire truck  racing , you chose to continue on your journey and ignore their warnings to make way or you get to an LPG filling station or Gas station where there are warning signs stating "DON'T MAKE CALLS", "SWITCH OFF YOUR ENGINE" but yet you chose to igno...

HEART DISEASE KILLS MORE THAN CANCER

Image
Source: Pixabay How true is this statement? Just this past month alone, there have been notable deaths of people who have slumped and died e.g Deji Tinubu, a Finance Director slumped and died while taking part in badminton tourney earlier this week, a final year undergraduate of FUTA slumped and died while playing football and there are many which didn't make the news. In all these stories that made the newspaper or online media you never read a part that CPR was first administered or an AED was on site and used. This will will tell you how ill-prepared we are to handle immediate cases of heart attack or heart failure, that could have been solved by implementing CPR or using an AED.  There is term called  social resuscitation . This term can simply be described as resuscitating not just the patient or victim of a heart attack but also resuscitating their family and friends which in turn will have a positive effect on our society. Therefore, if we all learn the the ac...

FIRST AID AND THE BYSTANDER EFFECT/APATHY

Image
Have you ever come across medical emergency situations, were people around are more interested in videoing the accident scenario or a helpless victim who has collapsed or is in medical distress? All these individuals want to do is post the videos on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or any other social media platform, for the likes and comments. But why is it so? Could it be that: We don't care? We don't know what to do to help casualties/victims in these situations? If we do help and the person(s) still die, it could turn out to be a police issue and when you think about some of the terrible stories you have heard about the experiences of some Good Samaritans that got into trouble, it discourages you. Even if you go past the police scare, you might still be reluctant to help because of suspicions that the victims/casualties might just be robbers or someone with sinister motives posing as a victim.   Just today, I came across an article in  The Punch online newspa...

FIRST AID TIPS: BURNS (VIDEOS)

Image
Source: Wikimedia Commons I saw a picture of lady who passed away as result of the burn she suffered. According to her sister, who posted the news on Facebook, the General hospital in Lagos State rejected her. How true is that? There should be an investigation into the reason why they rejected her. When someone is experiencing a burn which results into the blisters or broken skin, what first aid should be taken? You have to understand these injuries have opened avenues for all sought of bacteria to enter the body system, so it will be ill advised to undertake any unhygienic action, like a scenario I witness growing up where raw eggs were pulled on the burn victim. The ideal thing to do would be to pour running water or cold drinkable liquid on the affected the area to cool down the burn sensation.  Here are two videos describing what can you have to do. Video Sources: British Red Cross and Sikana English #BePrepared #GetTheSkill #Ge...

KNOWLEDGE IS EVERYTHING- OVERCOME THE BYSTANDER EFFECT

Image
Source: Insta Blog It's funny how we react when we see someone in distress. We should move from the new found culture of filming accident scenes, to doing the needed things to save a life. In the video link from instagblog9ja, it would have been more commendable if we had heard from the gentleman filming, of how people (if not him) around the accident victim are trying to resuscitate him (if he isn't responding) or tending to his wound. We should move from complaining and to being proactive by learning first aid skills.  Video Link: Instablog9ja #BePrepared #GetTheSkill #GetTheKit #BeFABulouS
