There are 3 classes of meds 1)Antacids-these help to neutralize the acid in your stomach produces, they are quite fast acting. Examples are Aluminum hydroxide, Magnesium hydroxide .... 2)H2 (Histamine) blockers-these reduce the quantity of acid the stomach produces. Examples are Cimetidine, Ranitidine..... 3)PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors)-these reduce the acid produced by the stomach.  Examples are Omeprazole, Esomeprazole... What Makes a Heartburn Happen???

Image
WHAT CAUSES HEARTBURN  Don't let these pictures attached put you off. I promise this isn't a biology class😁. We are just setting up an easy foundation.   So we know Mr Oesophagus right? Here is a little refresher, it is the tube that connects the mouth to the tummy. Food travels from the mouth via the oesophagus to the tummy. At the point where the oesophagus hooks up with the tummy. There is a muscle that opens up to let food move from the oesophagus into the tummy. It also shuts to stop  the contents of the tummy (food and gastric acids) from traveling back up the oesophagus.  If this muscle is slack, gastric acids can go up the oesophagus and cause the sensation we know as HEARTBURN (warm or burning sensation in the chest region) Told you it wasn't too much biology 😝😁😅 #Heartburn  #HeartburnCauses #digestivehealth  #digestiveailments #gastrointestinalhealth  #gastrointestinalailnents  #TheFABS  #TheFirstAid...

Heartburn

Image
HEARTBURN  Most people are familiar with the term "Heartburn". Heartburn of cause doesn't mean the heart is burning 😝. But it sure feels like something is burning! Heartburn is a burning sensation that is painful and/or uncomfortable. It is felt in the upper and/or middle area of the chest or even upper part of the stomach. The pain can sometimes radiate to the neck/throat, jaw or arms. Sometimes the mouth would taste bitter. The pain is usually worse after a (heavy) meal, when you are lying down or bending over. It could last for minutes or even hours. It isn't usually a big deal that requires a visit to the hospital. Lifestyle changes, home remedies and OTC meds are usually adequate in its management. So this is what causes a heartburn. In the digestion process, there are acids that are in the tummy that help in food digestion. If the acids(from the tummy) back up into the oesophagus (the tube that carries food from the mouth to the tummy), it causes th...

Drawing the curtains on Constipation

Image
CONSTIPATION IN SOME POPULATIONS  In drawing the curtains on constipation, lets have a quick look at constipation in pregnancy,  new borns and babies.  Constipation in Pregnancy  Quite a number of women experience constipation during pregnancy. This could be traced to -hormonal changes  -change in diet  -increase in iron intake  reduction in physical activities  -physical changes  To address this and to prevent it, refer to our older posts on prevention and management of constipation  Constipation in New Borns New borns are expected to stool their first solid stool within the first 48 hours after birth, if this doesn't happen, constipation could occur.  To avert this, the attention of the doctor must be sought, so that an investigation and a solution is proffered. Constipation in Babies  This could happen when formula is introduced to the baby, when the baby is being weaned or when the baby i...

Treatment for fecal impaction

Image
TREATMENT FOR FECAL IMPACTION  Trust me, an experience of fecal impaction is totally undesirable. It's best to prevent it from happening at all. In the poster attached are treatment options. In the enema option, liquid is introduced into the rectum to help expel the hardened poo In the water irrigation option, water is pumped into the rectum, warm water preferably, this also helps in the removal of the hardened poo Medicines that could also be used in freeing the rectum of hardened poo are -Suppositories:they are inserted into the rectum, they help draw water to the hardened poo, which helps with it's expulsion  -Laxatives:these are given orally and they help the system produce more water to soften the poo so it can be easily passed out -Stool softeners:these are mostly taken orally to help soften the stool e.g. liquid paraffin  -Lubricants:these are mostly applied through the anus to create lubrication for an easy passage of the hardened stool The hardened stoo...

Fecal Impaction

Image
FECAL IMPACTION  Some serious years ago i experienced fecal impaction, oh yes, i have first hand experience 🤦‍♀️🥺😭. I also know another victim, oh yes, my brother Maro🤣😝🙃. We are partners in the matter🤣 Fecal impaction is a complication of  constipation in which a hard, dry mass of stool becomes stuck in the colon or rectum. This immobile mass will block the passage and cause a buildup of waste, which a person will be unable to pass. During the period before my unfortunate experience, i didn't realise i was constipated. On a particular day i eventually felt the need to go, i got into the loo to do my business, and nothing was coming out 😭 I needed tools to save the day. I was in pains and frustrated. I could feel the extra hard poo just at my anal entrance, but it won't just come out. I called out to my partner in fecal impaction, i told him.i needed toothpicks 😱🥺😭, aboniki balm😱😱😱🥺🥺🥺😭..it was a nasty experience, I eventually got my freedom through...

Complications of constipation

Image
COMPLICATIONS OF CONSTIPATION  Sometimes complications can arise from constipation.  So when constipation is not managed early and adequately these complications arise. Here are a few of them👇 -Rectal bleeding  - Intestine protrudes through the anus (rectal prolapse) - Stool gets so hard and blocks the rectum (fecal impaction) - Skin of the anus gets torn (anal fissure) - Veins in the anus swells up (hemorrhoids/pile) #Constipation #ConstipationProblems #Constipated #ComplicationsOfConstipation #DigestiveAilments #DigestiveHealth #GastrointestinalAilments #GastrointestinalHealth #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop #BeFABulouS
