Preventing CAD

Image
Heads Up on the complications of CAD. We need to know how badly the effects of CAD can be, the info would help us take CAD prevention more seriously. Thankfully CAD is preventable πŸ‘ The complications include πŸ‘‡ -chest pain (angina) -heart attack -abnormal heartbeat -heart failure  -sudden death In prevention of CAD embracing a healthy lifestyle greatly reduces your risk. So quit smoking, healthy diet only, maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.  Also monitor blood pressure, blood sugar  and cholesterol levels. CAD is preventable, make healthy choices to avoid the complications of CAD. #CoronaryArteryDisease #CAD #SilentDiseases #SilentKiller #TheFABS #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Risk factors for CAD

Image
Let's take a rundown of those at risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) Those who have πŸ‘‡ - high blood pressure  - family history of coronary artery disease  - diabetes  - high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) - low HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) - weight issues (obesity) - a sedentary lifestyle - a smoking habit - emotional stress - unhealthy diet choices - age (the risk increases with age) So there risk factors that we have control over and a few that ate totally out of our control.  #CoronaryArteryDisease #CAD #SilentDisease #SilentKiller #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Next is CAD

Image
Coronary artery disease (CAD), sounds like corona?πŸ™„. They are no relations😝 Coronary artery carries blood to the heart (it's a major blood vessel of the heart), and it is responsible for supplying oxygen and nutrients to the heart. CAD is damage to the coronary artery, it could be blocked or narrowed. And then this reduces or cuts off blood supply to the heart.  How does this happen? A build up of plaque in the walls of the artery causes it. So plaque is made up of cholesterol, cellular wastes, proteins, calcium, and fatty deposits. The plaque buildup could cause total or partial blockage of the coronary artery. The narrowing of the coronary artery starts without giving any signs or symptoms and happens for a long period before the effects finally begin to show. This could weaken the heart muscles and lead to a heart attack or heart failure. This is one silent disease that should not be handled with kids gloves.  #CoronaryArteryDisease #CAD #SilentDisease #Silent...

Preventing osteoporosis

Image
Now you all need to listen up😐, since osteoporosis is such a silent disease, preventing it is so important. Especially if you fall in the high risk spectrum, take the following info seriously.  - check your risk factors, it is advisable you do a bone density test  - get active, engage in weight bearing/lifting exercises  - take calcium supplements  - take vitamin D - quit smoking  - eat healthy meals. Include foods rich in calcium and vitamin D. Fruits and veggies  - reduce alcohol consumption  So choose healthy lifestyle options and prevent osteoporosis  #Osteoporosis #SilentDisease #OsteporosisPrevention #BoneHealth #Bones #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Who is at risk

Image
So who is at risk???πŸ€” Heyyyy, not true that osteoporosis is strictly for the seniors, no, it can happen at any age. Here is a list of those at risk   πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ - family history of osteoporosis  - females are more prone 😭😭😭 (but men can have it too) - race (caucasians and asians) -post menopausal women  - older people  - poor diet - smokers - people who live sedentary lifestyles  - people with smaller body frames  Remember that at the early stage of osteoporosis it is really difficult to detect and diagnose. So if you think you are at risk, talk to your doctor and you'll probably be asked to do a bone density test.  #Osteoporosis #SilentDiseases #Bones #BoneDiseases #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Osteoporosis 101

Image
Osteoporosis is a bone disease.  It causes the bones to deteriorate, making them frail/weak, thin and brittle. They lose density. You get the picture now?  Ok, the attached picture does justice with helping to  understand what osteoporosis does to the bones. The bones get so fragile that any little stress, fall or pressure can cause the bones to fracture. So you find out that regular activities like bending or stooping can cause fracture. Yes, it's also a silent disease as it doesn't present with symptoms at the early stage. You know of course the bones are the internal framework of the body, so with weak bones, a lot of activities are hampered. We need strong bones to get things done. #Osteoporosis #SilentDisease #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Preventing glaucoma

Image
Anyone really is at risk of glaucoma, however if we zooming into those most at risk, then here's a list -those with a family history of glaucoma  -diabetics -over 40 YO hypertensives -short- sighted people (extreme cases) To prevent blindness from glaucoma,πŸ‘‡ -routinely have your eye pressure checked by an ophthalmologist, even if you don't have a family history of glaucoma  -live healthy. Eat healthy. Engage in exercises.  You don't want to lose your sight we know, so have those eyes checked. Glaucoma is so sneaky. Remember, symptoms only pop up when it has advanced.  #Glaucoma #SilentDisease #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulous

Fire Safety

Image
FIRE SAFETY  Some time ago i heard about a fire accident that claimed the life of a septuagenarian. Sad. Before that the news was about some kids who also lost their lives in a fire accident. Every now and then, these sad events happen. The need for us to take fire safety seriously cannot be stressed any further!  Here are some nugget that should help: 1) Do not leave fires unattended. Especially kitchen fires, open fires either from candles, bush fires, fires from burning thrash etc. 2) Installing smoke detectors and fire alarms will do nothing but great good 3) Keep away flammable articles from fires eg. don't place burning candles on wooden furniture or close to curtains etc 4) Have a functional fire extinguisher close by in homes, work spaces, vehicles etc. 5) In the event of a fire outbreak,  get out ASAP and stay out until the fire service arrives, trying to go back in to rescue valuables could cost life #FireSafety #SafetyNuggets #TheFirstAidBoxShop #The...

Glaucoma 101

Image
This is no biology class we promise 😝 but we need for you to understand glaucoma on a really basic level.  In our eyes there is a fluid called aqueous humor, this fluid flows out of the eye through a mesh-like structure called trabecular mesh.  Now, if this mesh is blocked the aqueous humor will build up in the eye and cause a high pressure in the eye. Some other time, the production of the aqueous humor is too much, so that it cant drain out fast enough and this also builds a high pressure in the eye. This pressure damages what is called the optic nerve (this sends messages to the brain so we can see). Once damaged, cannot be fixed, eventually results in the loss of vision which cannot be recovered. The problem is that the cause of increased production of aqueous humor or the reason for the blockage of the mesh are not known πŸ˜”  So there is nothing anyone can do to prevent glaucoma but thankfully if discovered really early, blindness can be stopped 😁 #Glauc...

Glaucoma

Image
Glaucoma! This is a really silent disease, thankfully no one dies from it,  however it drastically affects the quality of life and lifestyle as it can lead to blindness πŸ˜” It is actually one of the leading causes of blindness.  Glaucoma is abnormally high pressure in the eye. It can affect anyone of any age, but more of people over 60 YO Glaucoma isn't preventable but blindness as a result of glaucoma is preventable, and this piece of info right here brings so much hope to those who have it. Glaucoma is such a silent disease that one can never tell of it's presence until it has reached an advanced stage or one carries out a routine eye check. There is immense benefit in having comprehensive medical check up routinely as silent diseases can be nipped early before they cause devastating effects.  #Glaucoma #SilentDisease #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Have you tested your blood sugar level lately ?

Image
In the early stages of diabetes or in the prediabetic stage, there are no obvious signs and symptoms, remember it's a silent disease.  It's best to routinely check your blood sugar levels, especially if you have a high risk of becoming diabetic, by conducting a blood sugar test.  A glucometer is used to test blood sugar levels, it can be done in a hospital, a laboratory or even at home. Fasting blood sugar (FBS) test is done before you take a meal, best done in the morning (fast before the test is done, don't eat or drink at least 8 hours before the test). It is a very reliable and accurate test. After an FBS, results are interpreted asπŸ‘‡ Normal range: 90-110 mg/dL Prediabetic :110-125 mg/dL Diabetes : >126 mg/dL Based on the result of the test, a lifestyle modification should be made, meds or/and insulin could be prescribed. #Diabetes #SilentDisease #SilentKiller #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

it's a myth

Image
It's a myth that too much sugar causes diabetes! Diabetes occurs as a result of lack of insulin, insufficient insulin or the body's inability to use the available insulin.  However cutting down on sugars can help the situation. Also too much sugar can lead to obesity which puts one at risk of diabetes.  #Diabetes #SilentDiseases #SilentKiller #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Facts about diabetes

What is diabetes ?

Image
Diabetes, not a new word, but do you know the facts about it?πŸ€” Here we goπŸ‘©‍🏫 Diabetes simply means there is too much sugar in the blood (high blood sugar). This happens when the insulin in our body can't regulate the blood sugar levels. Insulin is a hormone produced in the body and it's job is to control the levels of sugar in the blood, kind of helping maintain a balance.  In some cases, the body doesn't produce insulin, this is type 1 diabetes. At other times the insulin produced isn't enough or the body can't use the produced insulin well enough, this is type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes has a higher percentage of occurence than type 1. At the onset of diabetes, it doesn't present with obvious signs and symptoms, hence it is a silent disease.  #Diabetes #SilentDiseases #SilentKillers #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS
