Using Q tips in first aid care

Image
The recommendation for the use of cotton buds in wound care is that it can be used to sterilize or disinfect around the wounds. Infuse the cotton buds with antiseptic solution and clean around the wound. They are especially great for small cuts, bruises, scrapes.....  For larger wounds, other options like gauze or cotton wool would be better.  If there is floating foreign object in the eye, you could wet the cotton bud and use it to gently dislodge the foreign object in the absence of flowing water.  So, there we go, those are practical ways of using cotton buds in first aid care. #CottonBuds #FirstAid #FirstAidCare #FirstAidSavesLives #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Covid-19:do you comply with wearing a facemask when out in public

Image
Why do some of us still go out naked and vulnerable to the Covid-19 virus? We don't believe in the existence of the damned virus? We feel invincible? Wearing a facemask is sooooo uncomfortable? We feel safe cause we only interact with family and friends and heck they aren't infected! Covid-19 is for a certain group and not us? Them facemask is high maintenance wahala! Discomfort, i think is the biggest thing that prevents compliance. Alot of us really feel uncomfortable wearing them. Some of feel deprived of air, sweaty and gagged.  But we hear the price of non compliance is unthinkable.  So let's do the needful. This too shall pass. #Facemasks #Covid-19  #WearAFacemask #WearAFacemaskAndStopTheSpread #StopTheSpreadOfCovid10 #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Seizures really suck!

Image
Today, i remembered a sad incident that occurred in Lagos, Nigeria, sometime in 2017. A medical doctor committed suicide by jumping off the third mainland bridge. There was no suicide note. So people (colleagues mostly) tried to come up with possible reason(s) for his act. Amongst the guesses was this👉that he had a health challenge that caused him to experience seizures and this was a big downer for him😔 We are all fighting one battle or some other. Let's as much as possible show kindness and love.  Discriminating against someone because of a health challenge, status or whatever makes their world even worse. Be mindful of your mental health and those of others.  A seizure is sudden, it is uncontrolled electrical malfunction in the brain. It affects one's consciousness, perception, behaviour and movements.  Here is a list of triggers  -fevers -infection in the brain -stroke -tumors in the brain -trauma to the head or brain  -loss of oxygen to the brain -alcohol wit

What's the function of cotton buds in your first aid kit/box?

Image
If you own a standard first aid kit/box, you are most definitely going to find some cotton buds in them. No, their inclusion in your first aid kit/box isn't to help apply or take off your make up😝 No, they're not there to "clean", poke or tickle your ears 🤦‍♀️. Putting stuff in your ears is a no-no, it poses the risk of damaging your eardrums  So what are they for? Cotton buds aka Q tips, cotton bud applicators, cotton tip applicators, cotton swabs in first aid kits/boxes are for 👇 1) cleansing wounds or area surrounding a wound 2) applying topical meds (burn cream, antiseptic ointment/solution etc.) 3) to pick out debris in the eye or wounds (in the absence of clean running water) So if you didn't know, now you know😁 It's not sufficient that you own a first aid kit/box, it's important that you know how to use it's contents. #CottonBuds #QTips #CottonTipApplicators #CottonBudApplicators #FirstAid #FirstAidKit ##FirstAidSavesLives #TheFA

First aid for seizures

Image
Epilepsy is not contagious  Epileptic seizures are not a sign of some psychological disorder  They are not a manifestation of some demonic possession  It's not good enough that you just be a spectator if someone is having a seizure and you happen to be present.  You can help the victim, but you know you have to stay calm. Here's how you can help👇 -make the place safe so that the victim doesn't suffer injuries. Move away furniture  or other sharp objects and hazards that may harm them -take note of the time the seizure started. If it lasts more than 5 minutes, then professional medical help should be sought  -cushion their head (with towel, clothes, blanket, a pillow etc.) -loosen any tight clothing (ties, belt, buttons especially around the neck) -do not try to hold them down or restrain them -do not put any thing in their mouth  -when the seizure has ended roll them on their side -then check their mouth to ensure there is no blockage in their airway -reassure t

Seizures

Image
The first time i witnessed someone having an epileptic seizure, i was utterly scared and confused.  I was in boarding school. You know how hostel bathrooms are never enough. So some of us were waiting for our turns to get into the bathroom.  All of a sudden there was some commotion,  someone had fallen and was having a seizure, most of the girls ran out of the bathroom area, while some of us watched from a safe distance.  I had never seen anything like that, i was so scared with all kinds of thoughts going through my head.  The poor girl eventually calmed down, picked herself up. She looked embarrassed. Much later i heard over the grapevine that she had a condition called epilepsy. That if her saliva touches anyone, the person would become epileptic. I also heard she could be in danger of biting her tongue off. Also heard that if she clenches her jaw, she could die, so it was important to put an object between her upper and lower set of teeth, to preserve her life (but this

International Epilepsy Day

Image
Today is International Epilepsy day! When most people here of epilepsy, the next thing that comes to mind is seizures.  This year the theme is "Epilepsy is more than seizures" Epilepsy is a neurological disorder (the neurons are malfunction). The neurons in the brain cause it to have an abnormal activity. This leads to  👉seizures  Seizures aren't the only manifestations of epilepsy. Epilepsy is more than seizures. Here are other manifestations  👉loss of awareness/consciousness  👉unusual behaviors  👉unusual sensations and perceptions  Epilepsy is indeed more than seizures, here are some other experiences an epileptic patient suffers 👉embarrassment  👉prone to getting injured  👉sometimes they are discriminated against  👉side effects meds 👉reduced self confidence and self worth If more people understood epilepsy then those that are around epileptics would treat them better and not discriminate against them. #InternationalEpilepsyDay #EpilepsyIsMoreThanSei
