Seizures

The first time i witnessed someone having an epileptic seizure, i was utterly scared and confused.

I was in boarding school. You know how hostel bathrooms are never enough. So some of us were waiting for our turns to get into the bathroom.

All of a sudden there was some commotion,  someone had fallen and was having a seizure, most of the girls ran out of the bathroom area, while some of us watched from a safe distance.

I had never seen anything like that, i was so scared with all kinds of thoughts going through my head.

The poor girl eventually calmed down, picked herself up. She looked embarrassed. Much later i heard over the grapevine that she had a condition called epilepsy. That if her saliva touches anyone, the person would become epileptic. I also heard she could be in danger of biting her tongue off. Also heard that if she clenches her jaw, she could die, so it was important to put an object between her upper and lower set of teeth, to preserve her life (but this was for those brave enough to get close to her when she was experiencing the fit).

All myths!!!

In retrospect, she was most times a loner, though she was in a senior class, she hardly wielded her authority. Her health challenge made us avoid her and i guess took away her confidence as well. She also sustained injuries from her falls. I can still remember one she had on her chin, it was a deep gash that eventually left a scar.

Kids, we had no info. Very few people even right now have sufficient info about epilepsy.
