A little extra on foreign objects in the ear

Image
Some more to draw the curtains on foreign objects in the ear FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE EAR:SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS In as much as a foreign object in the ear is not a life and death issue, there are certain circumstances that should be pointed out. - When the foreign object is an organic substance (insects, food or plants), if these remain in the ear canal for a while, they have the tendency to cause an infection as they can decompose.  - Insects.  They may bite or sting and may damage the eardrum.  - Button batteries. Chemicals in these batteries can leak and cause harm. They can also burn. - After a foreign object has been removed,  and the casualty still feels pain or discomfort,  they should see a doctor. If there is discharge or bleeding, they should see a doctor.  - If there is difficulty in hearing, even after the foreign object has been taken out, then a doctor should be seen. #ForeignObjectsInTheEar #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

True stories of victims of insect in the ear

Image
VICTIMS OF INSECT THE EAR OK, so i know a couple of victims of insect in the ear saga🀣 One of my "not so" kid brothers (Fejiro)and the other my "not so" kid cousins (Oro). Pictures of victims attachedπŸƒ‍♀️πŸƒ‍♀️πŸƒ‍♀️ So as kids, sometimes we fall asleep on one of the couches in the the living room. On one Friday night, while Fejiro was in primary school, he fell asleep on the couch and his snooze was abruptly disturbed 🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣. He jumped up and started wailing 🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣 grabbing his ear, in obvious distress (he says it wasn't painful). An insect had gotten itself trapped in the poor child's earπŸ₯Ί My folks who were uneducated about first aid matters🀦‍♀️🀣🀣 tried to use cotton buds, biro cover πŸ˜±πŸ˜±πŸ˜±πŸ™†‍♀️πŸ™†‍♀️πŸ™†‍♀️ to get rid of the insect, but oh well, were unsuccessful.  They eventually made the trip to the hospital and the offending insect was finally dislodged. It was with olive oil, they  couldn't wait for...

When to see a doc for foreign objects in the ear

Image
When to visit a doctor concerning foreign objects in the ear, not everything should entirely be managed at home. First aid would always help and prevent a bad situation from getting worse. WHEN TO MAKE THAT VISIT TO A HOSPITAL FOR FOREIGN OBJECT IN THE EAR  Most of the time a foreign object in the ear isn't a life threatening situation, however it is important to get it out ASAP. There are situations when it is absolutely necessary to get professional medical help. In the poster attached are scenarios that demand a visit to the doctor's office.  #ForeignObjectsInTheEar #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop #BeFABulouS

Getting rid of insects in the ear

Image
HOW TO REMOVE INSECTS FROM THE EARS  Insect stuck in the ear can be very distressing and should be removed as soon as possible, if a stuck insect can sting or bite, it's even more distressing and dangerous.  The plan is to get rid of the insect ASAP. A Health Care Provider (HCP) is in the best position to get it done as they have the skills and tools. However before getting to the hospital, first aid can be deployed to make the casualty feel better. This is done by killing the insect so that the irritating buzzing sound is stopped and harm to the eardrum is averted. If the eardrum isn't damaged and there is no ear tube, mineral oil, olive oil, vegetable oil, baby oil can be used to suffocate the insect.  - Heat up some of the oil to be used, it should be warm and not hot. - Support the casualty's head and tilt it with the affected ear uppermost or upward - Pour the warm oil into the affected ear -Wait for a while until the insect floats - Then turn the head so...

Firdt Aid Care For Removing Foreign Objects In The Ear

Image
FIRST AID CARE FOR FOREIGN OBJECT IN THE EAR  Most of the time, a foreign object in the ear isn't a life and death situation. However it is important to get the foreign object out as soon as possible.  A foreign object in the ear can cause temporary difficulty in hearing, discomfort, pain and eaven an infection. So it's best that it is removed ASAP. Sometimes dislodging the foreign object can only be done in a hospital. At other times first aid care is sufficient.  In the poster attached are steps to take in successfully dislodging a foreign object in the ear, at home. Note that the aims are: -to prevent injury to the ear -to remove or kill a trapped insect -not to cause further harm  -to know when you can't safely dislodge the foreign object and you need professional aid -to safely take the casualty to the hospital  #ForeignObjectsInTheEar #FirstAidSavesLives #FirstAid #TheFABS #TheFirstAidBoxShop #BeFABulouS

What not to do when removing foreign objects in the ear

Image
FIRST AID CARE FOR FOREIGN OBJECT IN THE EAR  Remember that in rendering first aid, it is important not to cause further harm. In the poster attached are some important info on what not to do when administering first aid care for a casualty that has a foreign object in the ear. In addition here are some explanations on the info given: -Sometimes people use cotton buds, matchsticks, toothpicks and other toolswhen trying to dislodge foreign objects (e.g. beads, pebbles, bottons etc.) from the ears, the thing is that this could cause further harm as the objects are most likely further pushed into the ear. -Remember, once the object isn't visible or pliable or can't be easily grasped with a pair of tweezers, don't burther attempting to dislodge,   take the casualty to the hospital where they have tools to professionally remove it. -If the eardrum is damaged there will be bleeding from the ears, there wil be pain and there might be discharge. So do not attempt to u...

Ear Wax Impaction

Image
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT EAR WAX HAS BECOME A FOREIGN OBJECT IN THE EAR  Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance that is found in the ear canal. It's function is to keep the ear healthy, it does this by trapping dirt and dust so they don't travel further and cause problems.  The act of using cotton buds or bird feathers to "clean" the ears (removing ear wax) is not a safe practice. This action actually pushes some ear wax further down the ear canal. Over time, ear wax can be impacted (becomes pressed firmly together), this then forms a hard mass of ear wax in the ear canal. The signs and symptoms that ear wax has impacted in the ear canal are: -difficulty in hearing  -a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear -dizziness -nausea and vomiting  -unsteadiness while walking  Watch out for these signs and symptoms especially if you are in the habit of "cleaning" your ears. #ForeignObjectsInTheEar #EarWaxImpaction #SignsAndSymptoms #TheFABS  #BeFA...

Signs and symptoms of a foreign object in the ear

Image
What are the signs and symptoms that an object is lodged in the ear?πŸ€” SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FOREIGN OBJECT IS IN THE EAR Most times, you can tell if there is a foreign object in the ear but for kids it can be a tricky bit, especially if they can not yet communicate verbally.  So with these kids, it isn't noticed on time until certain signs present- redness, swelling and/or discharge (blood, pus etc.) and these happen especially when the foreign object has caused an injury.  In general, the signs and symptoms will depend on the size, shape and substance of the foreign object.  It is best if a foreign object in the ear is dislodged ASAP. So be on the alert, especially for kids. #ForeignObjectsInTheEar #SignsAndSymptoms #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Sources of foreign objects in the nose

Image
SOURCES OF FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE EAR  Apart from insects crawling or flying into the ear by accident, other foreign objects are intentionally placed in the ear.  For kids, it's out of curiosity and experimentation. For adults, most times,it's because they want to take care of an itch or remove wax from the ear. Taking care of an ear itch, the most frequently used objects are biro covers, tips of biros and pencils, feathers, cotton buds. They all have the potential to cause damage, especially to the eardrums.  So please, we ask of you, do not poke your ears with foreign objects πŸ₯Ί Thank you😁 #foreignObjectsInTheEar #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Insects in the ear

Image
INSECTS AS FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE EAR Another source of foreign objects in the ear are insects. Sometimes insects can fly or crawl into the ear, adults and kids are victims, in fact anyone can be a victim. Insects in the ears can be so uncomfortable and can cause damage.  #ForeignObjectsInTheEar #Insects #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Feathers to tickle the ear

Image
You enjoy using feathers to tickle your ears??? It's a risky practice FEATHERS AS FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE EAR Using feathers to tickle the ear or to remove wax aka "clean the ear" is a common practice that could damage the eardrum.  As pleasurable as using feathers to tickle the ears can be, the risk of damage to the eardrums should be taken seriously.  As much as possible, do not put any foreign objects in the ear because of the risk involved.  #ForeignObjectsInTheEar #Feathers #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Do you abuse cotton buds ???

Image
COTTON BUDS AS FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE EAR  Cotton buds are like a staple in most homes. It's interesting to know what people use cotton buds for, as they seem to have diverse uses. In fact there really is an abuse of cotton buds 🀷‍♀️🀦‍♀️πŸ™†‍♀️. Here are a few uses (both conventional and unconventional): -to apply makeup  -to remove makeup  -to apply certain meds (gentian violet, paints etc) -to take care of an itch in the ear -to tickle the ear -to remove wax from the ear The truth is that cotton buds or Q tips push ear wax further or deeper into the ear. Having wax in the ear is a good thing. The function of the wax is to keep the ears healthy, it does this by trapping dust and dirt so they don't travel further into the ear. We really shouldn't engage in removing the wax from our ears in the name of cleaning our ears. Yes we know the temptation is overwhelming 😊.  Ear wax is a good thing. The only problem is when there is an exc...

Causes of foreign objects in the ear

Image
CAUSES OF FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE EAR There are a number of causes of foreign objects in the ear.  Whatever the cause or source, they have the potential to cause discomfort and damage, foreign objects are most times alien, they are introduced externally but there is also the situation of ear wax becoming a foreign object  (that is when it is no longer paste-like but hard and causes difficulty in hearing). Here are a few causes of foreign objects in the ear: -toys or small toy parts -food material  -insects (cockroaches, flies, crickets etc.) -ear wax -cotton bud/cotton wool -beads -button batteries  -feathers (chicken etc.) -pencils -biros -biro covers Of course this list isn't exhaustive  #ForeignObjectsInTheEar #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Foreign Objects in the Ear-Intro

Image
FOREIGN OBJECT IN THE EAR Foreign objects can get into the ears accidentally or intentionally.  In kids, it is mostly intentionally, while experimenting, at play or out of curiosity. At other times it could be accidental.  In adults it is mostly accidental.  Insects can crawl into the ear, loose cotton wool around cotton buds can accidentally be lodged in the ear and a variety of other objects can be lodged in the ear.  Foreign objects in the ear may cause deafness  (temporarily or permanently). Whatever the case, the aim is to safely dislodge the foreign object, this is usually achieved in a hospital.  We would be giving info on: - Sources/causes of foreign objects in the ear - Signs and symptoms of foreign objects in the ear  - First aid care and treatment for foreign objects in the ear - When to see a doctor about a foreign object in the ear - How to prevent foreign objects from entering the ear This promises to be informative and intere...

First Responders

Image
World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims  This year the theme is "FIRST RESPONDERS" Who really is a first responder? This is a person who is amongst the first set of people to get to an accident scene or a scene that demands emergency services. They have been specially trained to respond and provide care to victims of an accident or other emergencies. They save the day like a super hero would. They are: -paramedics -law enforcement officers (police officers, in Nigeria (officers of FRSC,Lastma,LNSC etc.) -EMTs (EmergencyMedical Technicians) -fire fighters -firstAiders On this day,  we salute and appreciate all first respondersπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ€—. We also thank passersby who have helped victims of road traffic accidentsπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ€— We thank you all for the roles you play in helping victims of road traffic accidents.  #WDR #WorldDayofRemembranceForRoadTrafficVictims #FirstResponders #FRSC #PoliceOfficers #FireFighters #LASTMA #LNSC #EMT #EmergencyMedicalTechni...

Road traffic accidents and first aid

Image
World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims Roads indeed have stories. Road traffic victims are road users-drivers and riders of automobiles, 2- and 3-wheelers, their passengers and pedestrians.  Most of the time victims of road traffic accidents don't get help within the golden hour and this narrows chances of survival and desirable outcomes.  Prompt availability of first responders, availability of first aid kit and first aid skills are definitely game changers during a road traffic accident.  Road accidents are preventable. Having first aid kits and skills always increases survival chances.  Some deaths, disabilities and injuries from road traffic accidents are avoidable. Let's all stay prepped for medical emergencies.  Get first aid skills Get first aid kits #WDR2020 #WorldDayOfRemembranceForRoadTrafficVictims #FirstResponders #FRSC #FederalRoadSafetyCorps #FirstAid #FirstAidSavesLives #TheFirstAidBoxShop #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS
