FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE EAR:SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

In as much as a foreign object in the ear is not a life and death issue, there are certain circumstances that should be pointed out.

- When the foreign object is an organic substance (insects, food or plants), if these remain in the ear canal for a while, they have the tendency to cause an infection as they can decompose. 

- Insects.  They may bite or sting and may damage the eardrum. 

- Button batteries. Chemicals in these batteries can leak and cause harm. They can also burn.

- After a foreign object has been removed,  and the casualty still feels pain or discomfort,  they should see a doctor. If there is discharge or bleeding, they should see a doctor. 

- If there is difficulty in hearing, even after the foreign object has been taken out, then a doctor should be seen.
