World Hypertension Day 2020

Image
The original schedule for the celebration of World Hypertension Day is May 17th, but because of the Covid 19 pandemic it was re-set for October 17th. The theme for World Hypertension Day 2020 is " Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer"   The goal is to increase accuracy of high blood pressure (BP) measurement in all populations around the world.  Know Your Numbers (BP reading) with a goal of increasing high blood pressure (BP) awareness in all populations around the world. So question is this. Do you know your blood pressure reading? Not the reading of 2 years ago or last week, or last month's.  Do you know how to accurately take blood pressure? Uncontrolled blood pressure or blood pressure that isn't monitored puts one at risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney disease. Hypertension can be effectively managed. It involves life style change, sticking with treatment plan and monitoring your blood pressure.  If you are hype

First aid care for mosquito bites

Image
FIRST AID FOR MOSQUITO BITES Yeah, a little first aid care for mosquito bites šŸ˜ Mosquito bites are not such a big deal for most people, irrespective of the specie that has caused the bite, they sometimes have the potential to cause an illness ( Encephalitis, Malaria, Yellow fever, West Nile Virus disease, Zika etc.) To manage the signs and symptoms that may present after a bite, the recommended first aid care are easy to comply with. Note that some mosquito bites are harmless However, if after a bit, symptoms (fevers, flu-like symptoms etc ) of an illness begin to pop up, then a laboratory investigation should be done and a treatment plan followed if the lab results are positive.  It's not advisable to pop meds without a laboratory result to back up the use of therapeutic meds. This actually is drug abuse. #Mosquitoes  #MosquitoBites #FirstAid #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Source of mosquito bites

Image
SOURCE OF MOSQUITOE BITES This is a no-brainer really. However, it's noteworthy to point out that it is the female mosquitoes that bite. They have mouth parts that can inject the skin and suck out blood. The male mosquitoes do not feed on blood, as they they do not produce eggs, hence have need for the protein. So what ever the specie of mosquito (Aedes, Anopheles, Culex etc.), the females are the bitersšŸ˜ #Mosquitoes #Bites #MosquitoesBites #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

WORLD RESTART A HEART DAY So a cardiac arrest is one common scenario that causes a heart to stop thumping and results in death if the heart is not restarted. (You know how a manual car has to be pushed to start when it has certain issues). If the heart isn't manipulated to restart in the shortest possible time, death is eminent. So every second counts and restarting the heart via CPR increases survival chances. Today is set aside annually to increase awareness and train on this intervention of restarting a heart that has stopped thereby saving lives. Do you know how to restart a heart? #WorldRestartAHeartDay2020 #LearnToRestartAHeart #CPRSavesLives #LearnCPR #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Your two hands can restart a heart. World Restart A Heart Day 2020

WORLD RESTART A HEART DAY Restart a Heart Day is annually set on October 16th and is devoted to create awareness and train people on how to restart hearts that have stopped through CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and the use of AED (Automated External Defibrillator) This year the theme is: "Your two hands can save a life" Really, all you need are your two hands. The power to preserve lives lies in themšŸ™Œ. The hands are what are used to administer CPR. Without CPR, the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest is next to zero. Cardiac arrest do not often occur in medical facilities  During a cardiac arrest, every second counts A cardiac arrest victim is unconscious and not breathing. If there is no medical intervention in about 7 minutes, then death is certain  Restarting a heart via CPR saves lives  Everyone can learn to restart heart Everyone should learn CPR  Anyone can learn CPR Your hands (and breath) can save lives CPR skills is not necessarily for HCP (Healt

Can you restart a heart?

World Restart A Heart Day 2020

WORLD RESTART A HEART DAY 2020 TOO MANY LIVES HAVE BEEN LOST BECAUSE NO ONE KNEW HOW TO RESTART THEIR HEARTS Today is World Restart A Heart Day!!! So someone's heart stops pumping  blood for some reason, the heart stops beating, most definitely it is a cardiac emergency. This could lead to death if the heart is not restarted. If the heart is not beating,in 10 minutes the person could actually die.So the fact that the heart has stopped beating is not always equal to death, but if the heart stops beating for a period as long as 10 minutes then chances of restarting the heart are really slim and death is certain. Only 1 in 10 survive a cardiac arrest. We can step up this number by learning to restart a heart. Make it your aim to know how to restart  a heart via 1.CPR-cardiopulmonary resuscitation 2.use of an AED-automated external defibrillator  3.callng EMS-emergency medical service These increase the survival rates before the victim has access to professional medical care #Wo

Mosquitoes 101

Image
You know those annoying buzzing sounds, especially at night. Yes. MOSQUITOES. They bite and mostly feed on the blood of their hosts.  Most of the time, when we think of mosquitoes, what comes to mind is MALARIA! Mosquitoes are insects. I hear there are over 3,000 specues!šŸ˜±. Most of them cause diseases to humans, other mammals and even birds. Some common species are: -Aedes. These cause yellow fever, West Nile disease  -Anopheles. These cause malaria  -Culex. These cause West Nile disease, St Louis Encephalitis  -Culiseta. These cause Eastern Equine Encephalitis  -Masonia. These cause Encephalitis  -Psorophora -Toxorhynchites -Wyeomyia So when you hear that really annoying buzzing sound and feel that flickering pain from an insect bite, the culprit is most likely a mosquito, if you live in Nigeria, the most likely suspect is of the anopheles specie. Different species are found in different locations/countries. Anopheles are not abundant i

World Thrombosis Day 2020

Image
WORLD THROMBOSIS DAY (WTD) 2020 WTD is celebrated annually on the 13th of  October. The theme this year is: Eyes Open To Thrombosis  The whole idea of WTD is to  i) Increase global awareness of thrombosis ii) Know the causes of thrombosis  iii)Understand and know its risk factors iv) Know the signs/symptoms of thrombosis v) Know how to prevent it vi) Have an idea on it's treatment Do you know what Thrombosis is?šŸ¤” Simply put, it is the formation of a blood clot ( known as a thrombus) within a blood vessel. It prevents blood from flowing normally through the body's circulatory system. Thrombosis is life threatening and can also cause disabiliyies. A popular type is the DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). It occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, most common site is the leg. It can be life threatening. Inactivity for a long time could cause it,for example, people on a long flight. For prevention, it is advised that you get up o

First aid care for cat and dog bites

Image
FIRST AID CARE FOR CAT AND DOG BITES  First aid care will definitely reduce the risk of infection after a cat or dog bite. In administering first aid care for a cat/dog bite, your first aid kit/box will definitely come in handy. Before commencing first aid care, wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer. Then wear gloves, these actions protect you and the victim of the bite. For a minor bite/wound, first aid care is most likely sufficient, the bleeding isn't significant,  but for a deep bite/wound, the bleeding is more, in this case, the first thing to do is to control and stop the bleed.  Washing the wound gently and thoroughly flushes out the bacteria and reduces the risk of an infection. Then rinse wound under running water for 5-10 minutes.  After first aid, be sure to wash your hands.  Be sure to watch out  for the start of an infection during the healing process. You do not want to take chances  that may lead to complications.  #FirstAid #FirstAidSavesLi

Risk of getting a cat or dog bite getting infected

Image
So some situations and some people are most likely to have a cat or dog bite infected.  Some scenarios of bite infection can be easily prevented or managed while others are a bit tricky. For example, someone with a weak immune system is a tricky bit but extra caution must be. #Cats #Dogs #CatBites #DogBites #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

How to know when a cat or dog bite is infected

Image
Cat and dog bites cause wounds that can become easily infected. Cat bites are more likely to cause an infection than a dog bite. Bites to hands, feet, tendons and joints are most at risk of getting infected.  A bite wound from a cat or dog can get infected and the signs can manifest within a few hours after a bite to a day or 2 after a bite. The reasons for infection of bite wounds are: - The bites introduce bacteria to the wound because the mouths of these animals contain bacteria. - If appropriate first aid care isn't administered  - If there is no proper follow up care - If a doctor visit isn't made when necessary  Infections from cats and dogs can cause infections like, rabies, tetanus, sepsis and capnocytophaga (yes, i know it's a mouthful, even for mešŸ¤) So even after first aid care or a hospital visit, while the wound is trying to heal, please do watch out for signs of infection.  #Cats #CatLovers #CarBites #Dogs #DogLovers #DogBites #SignsOfInfection #Th

Signs and symptoms of dog bites

Image
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A DOG BITE  Dogs being referred to as CANINES is no jokešŸ¤. They sure know how to use their canines. Dog teeth are bigger than those of cats' and they are not as sharp as those of cat's, but that doesn't make them less painful when they bite. The mouths of animals generally contain bacteria, so a bite has the potential of introducing bacteria to the wound. Here are obvious signs and symptoms of dog bites -Redness -Bite marks  -Swelling -Pain -Bleeding -Tissue damage  It's important that prompt first aid is administered to reduce the chances of the wound getting infected.  #Dogs #DogLovers #DogBites #Bites #SignsAndSymptomsOfDogBites #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS
