How the heart beats

Image
Electrical system Electricity  Electric signals  Before each heartbeat, the heart first fills up with blood and then it contracts to push out the blood to the blood vessels so that the body can get blood supply (remember the blood carries oxygen and nourishment to celks, tissues and organs). For the heart to contact, it does so by the electrical signals  These are not terms that comes to us when we think about the heart and what makes it beat.  So yessssss, our hearts have an electrical system, this system controls the rate and rhythm of our heartbeat. The normal heart beat is between 60-100 beats per minute. If the heart beats at a rate that is too high or low, then it's an indication that there is a problem with the electrical system and an unresolved electrical system can lead to Sundden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) When the heartbeat is irregular, it is an indication that there is a problem with the heart rhythm and it is called 👉Arrhythmia  If the heart rhythm is too fast

Sudden Deaths-the slump and die syndrome

Image
No doubt, we have heard about episodes of people carrying out their regular daily activities, seemingly healthy and then suddenly slump and eventually reported dead!😭😥😞 The scenarios are endless! A young man is playing football, basketball etc and suddenly slumps and dies😥. A lady is working at her desk, or out socializing and suddenly slumps and dies😥. A pastor is preaching at the pulpit and suddenly slumps and dies 😥. A muslim is saying his prayers and suddenly slumps and dies😥. These cases leave us totally confused,  especially when the victims had seemed relatively healthy. All kinds of explanations are thought up, thankfully scientific investigations have helped us unravel the "slump and die" mystery  Sudden deaths always have an underlying cause but they just happen suddenly. The most common cause of sudden death is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Can something be done to change the sad narrative of "slump and die"? Good news 👏 👍 🙌  Yes, the

World Parkinson's Day

Today is World Parkinson's Day (WPD) All over the world today, there is a collective effort to raise awareness on Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease is brought about by damage to nerve cells located in the brain, so it is a nervous system issue.  It's main presentation is seen with movement. A person with Parkinson's disease has problems in coordinating movement and some body functions. So there are tremors, slow movement, stiffness, involuntary movements, speech difficulties, difficulty in swallowing, staring blankly etc  This year, we are being encouraged to know more of Parkinson's disease,  there is not enough awareness of the disease and the more we know about it, the better we can support thise living with it and hopefully better ways of managing it, will emerge  #WorldParkinsonsDay2021 #WPD #KnowMoreOfParkinsonsDisease #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS
