PEOPLE ARE IGNORANT ABOUT CO POISONING AND THE SOURCES πŸ˜”

Image
POPULAR BEAUTICIAN DIES FROM CO (CARBON MONOXIDE) POISONING EMITTED FROM CHARCOAL  Just recently, on the 23rd of August 2020, in Obudu, Cross River State, a popular beautician passed on as a result of inhalation of CO  Most people know of how extremely cold Obudu can be. Though i did my youth service in Calabar, Cross River State, i never made it to Obudu. I had a couple of friends that went to the popular Obudu Cattle Ranch, and i was told about how cold the place was, that they even had fireplaces to help warm up the place Now, this lady was up at a hotel in Obudu (not neccesarily the Ranch), and it was soooo cold. Decided to warm up her space with charcoal  She never wakes up. If only she was aware of CO poisoning. If only she knew that though there might be no physical evidence of the emission of CO from the burning coals, that she was at risk of CO poisoning, she would have still been alive  Let's be aware, be very aware of the sources of poisoning, so we don't

7 WOMEN DIE IN A SALON FROM CO POISONING

Image
7 WOMEN ARE KILLED BY CO (CARBON MONOXIDE) POISONING IN A SALON This event occurred on the 31st of July 2020 in a place called Rijau in Niger State  The details are sketchy  News has it that the bodies of 7 women were found in a salon with the generator turned on inside the salon Some say some of the ladies came to have their hair done in preparation for the sallah holidays. Others say the ladies slept in the salon with the generator turned on Whatever really happened, one fact remains:CO emitted by the generator, killed these ladies Ignorance of the dangers and sources of CO poisoning was at play Avoidable deaths again!πŸ₯Ί https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/08/how-generator-fume-killed-seven-women-in-niger/amp/

BURNING CHARCOAL EMITS CO

Image
WOMAN & BOY KILLED BY CO (CARBON MONOXIDE) POISONING FROM BURNING CHARCOAL  The location is Ekwulobia in Anambra State. It's a really cold night on the 15th of July 2020. A 65 YO woman and her 11 YO househelp decide to burn some charcoal to warm up the room. They also decide to shut all the windows and doors to keep the cold at bay. There is poor ventilation. Burning charcoal gives off CO.  They are ignorant of the dangers of their actions.  Yes, burning coals will keep you warm. But burning coals also emit the deadly CO, which is trapped in the poorly ventilated room. They never woke upπŸ˜” We need to educate people on actions that are taken in ignorance that could endanger them Another avoidable death! https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2020/7/charcoal-fumes-suffocates-65-year-old-woman-and-her-houseboy-in-anambra-graphic.html

GENERATORS ARE EMITTERS OF CO

2 LADIES DIE IN A SALON FROM CO (CARBON MONOXIDE) POISONING πŸ˜” It's the 26th day of June 2020, 3 ladies show up for work at a salon somewhere in Ogba, Lagos State. There is no electricity so they turn on the generator. It starts raining, they decide to protect the generator from the rain, and bring it in. The windows and doors are shut.  The generator emits CO, there is poor ventilation, CO is inhaled, it replaces the much needed Oxygen in their system. They are not aware of what is going on, they slip into unconsciousness  Someone comes around and finds them unconscious. They are taken to the hospital, 2 are pronounced dead and the third is unconscious and the HCPs (Health Care Providers) battle to save her life 2 ladies came to work but never made it home ever again They died out of ignorance πŸ₯Ί https://topnaija.ng/how-generator-fumes-killed-two-hairdressers-in-lagos/

DANGERS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

Image
CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) POISONING:UNFORTUNATE CASES  Sometimes people expose themselves accidentally to poisons out of sheer ignorance.  Unfortunately the loss of precious lives is the result of such ignorance.  Knowledge is power. Knowledge can save and preserve lives Some deaths are absolutely avoidable and it's sooooo painful to hear or witness the loss of a life especially when it's completely avoidable  There have been quite a number of deaths in Nigeria from CO poisoning, sadly almost all of them are due to ignorance. This ignorance has been displayed by both the schooled and the unschooled  Thankfully being first aid learned isn't just for the educated, any and everybody can and should be first aid learned It would help if we help pass on to others vital info on the dangers of CO poisoning  It is important to note that CO is odorless, colorless and tasteless. So it mostly comes unnoticed, hence is a stalking silent killer😑 Do you have first aid kits or skil

POISON CONTROL CENTER

Image
What is a poisons control centre? A poisons control center is a specialized unit that advises on, and assists with, the prevention, diagnosis and management of poisoning. A poisons centre is an information service. Some poisons centres may also include a toxicology laboratory and/or a clinical treatment unit. On a normal, every country should have a poisons control centre, delegated with the responsibilities of: - answering enquiries about exposure to chemical agents, including  (1)products (2)pharmaceuticals  (3)natural toxins (animal & plant origin) (4)pesticides  (5)industrial chemicals Unfortunately, we are not aware of the existence of  a Nigeria Poison Control Center, saddled with the above responsibilities  With the existence and rise of people dying as a result of poisoning (deaths by sniper and CO poisoning), one would expect a poisons institute to rise to the occasion. We hope that if they exist, that they make themselves relevant and visible, if they don'

POISONS & INTOXICANTS

Image
SOURCES OF POISONING & INTOXICATION  Identifying the routes of entry of poisons and intoxicants is super important, so caution can be taken.  The routes are - Ingestion (swallowing and drinking) - Absorption through the skin - Inhalation  - Injection  - Splashed in the eyes Sources and Types  - Food and drinks (contaminated) - Drugs (OTCs,narcotics, Recreational & POMs) - Animals (bites & stings) - Water - Plants - CO (Carbon monoxide) -Heavy metals (Arsenic, Mercury, Lead...) - Alcohol - Chemicals (pesticides, industrial, cleaning products...) The above can cause different levels of poisoning, sometimes the poisoning is acute (a single exposure causes harm in a short time) or chronic (harm is caused by exposure over a long period) Sadly we may unknowingly have exposure to these poisons (e.g. CO, contaminated foods  heavy metals, plants.....). Good news is, knowledge puts a consciousness in us and preventive actions cand be deployed. However, if the poisoning does occur, kno

POISONING AND INTOXICATION

Image
POISONING! INTOXICATION! When we hear these words, what readily comes to mind?πŸ€” Can first aid or help be administered to victims of poisoning and intoxication?πŸ€”πŸ€” Do we really understand and have the basic info on what poisoning and intoxication are about?πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€” Ok, let's start from the very beginning  What is poisoning? Poisoning is any illness, injury or death that is caused by  (i)Ingesting (eating/swallowing) (ii)Inhaling (breathing) (iii)Touching (iv)Injecting  a dangerous/toxic substance  These dangerous/toxic substances chemically harm the body Other times, substances that are not originally dangerous/toxic can poison someone because the quantities taken are dangerously high (as seen in certain meds).  Poisoning can be accidental (as seen in kids) or could be intentional (with a motive to harm) What is intoxication? Intoxication is a change in mood, behaviour, thinking process, movement that is caused by substances, especially alcohol and narcotics Intoxication cause physi

WHEN DOES A NOSEBLEED BLEED NEED MORE ADVANCED MEDICAL CARE

Image
WHEN IS A NOSEBLEED AN EMERGENCY? We had mentioned earlier that a nosebleed can be eadoly stopped. To stop a nosebleed, the soft part of the nose should be pinched for about 10 minutes.  Sometimes first aid intervention is not sufficient to manage a nosebleed  There are situations that would however demand a visit to the ER, as medical professional intervention is needed  Here are a list of scenarios  -When the nosebleed is as a result of an injury, such as a car accident -Nosebleeds that results in the loss of a lot of blood -Nosebleeds that interfere with breathing -When a nosebleed last longer than 30 minutes even after pinching the nose  -When there are recurrent nosebleed episodes  -If you feel generally unwell  -Nosebleeds occurring in children younger than 2 years old It's important that one accesses professional medical care when any of the above occurs  At The FABS, we have a bouquet of the most practical and beautiful first aid kits. Come buy and get FABulouS #Nosebleed #

Do you know how to stop a bleed

Image
STOPPING A BLEED, AS EASY AS ABC πŸ˜πŸ‘πŸ‘ Yes it's that easy  So in the month of August, we have tried to demystify the whole bleeding issue. -We have emphasized that effort must be made to arrest all bleeding  -That there are different types of bleeding  -We have brought to our attention different levels of blood loss and their implications  .....and some other really important sub-topics, all related to bleeding, first aid care for cuts wounds and bleeding  Let's do a quick reminder on what first aid helps us achieve during a medical emergency  - First aid preserves life - First aid prevents a bad situation from getting worse  - First aid promotes quick recovery  However not all medical emergencies can be solely and adequately managed by first aid care. Sometimes a visit to the ER must be made after the initial first aid care First aid doesn't always and should not eliminate the need of more professional medical care However, whenever there is a medical emergency, first aid

HOW TO PREVENT A NOSEBLEED

Image
No doubt prevention is better than a cureπŸ€”πŸ™‚πŸ‘ Thing is this, some people are more prone to having a nosebleed than others  Here are a few ways to stopping that nosebleed from happening  1) Ensure your nostrils are moist, like we now know, a dry nose is really prone to nosebleeds. This can be achieved by applying petroleum jelly in the nostrils, as often as needed. Other options to help ensure the linings of the nose is moist is the use nasal sprays or nasal gels 2) If you live in an environment that the air is really dry or the season is really dry, you can use a humidifier in your home 3) Do not  pick or prod your nose. Also long and sharp nails are a no-no, as they easily rupture the delicate blood vessels inside the nose  4) Do not smoke as it cause your nostrils to become dry 5) If you play sports that involves contact with other players andcyou are prone to nosebleeds, wear a PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) e.g. a helmet  We hope these tips help reduce your episo
