POISONS & INTOXICANTS

SOURCES OF POISONING & INTOXICATION

Identifying the routes of entry of poisons and intoxicants is super important, so caution can be taken.

The routes are

- Ingestion (swallowing and drinking)
- Absorption through the skin
- Inhalation
- Injection
- Splashed in the eyes

Sources and Types

- Food and drinks (contaminated)
- Drugs (OTCs,narcotics, Recreational & POMs)
- Animals (bites & stings)
- Water
- Plants
- CO (Carbon monoxide)
-Heavy metals (Arsenic, Mercury, Lead...)
- Alcohol
- Chemicals (pesticides, industrial,cleaning products...)

The above can cause different levels of poisoning, sometimes the poisoning is acute (a single exposure causes harm in a short time) or chronic (harm is caused by exposure over a long period)

Sadly we may unknowingly have exposure to these poisons (e.g. CO, contaminated foods  heavy metals, plants.....).

Good news is, knowledge puts a consciousness in us and preventive actions cand be deployed. However, if the poisoning does occur, knowing what to do is a plus.
