CONSTIPATION!!! This is another quite common medical condition. The normal frequency for bowel movements (to poo) ranges from 3 times a day to 3 times a week. So, it's totally ok to poo just 3 times a week (as long as the poo has a normal consistency ie not too hard or too loose) Constipation is to poo hard stool less than 3 times a week (so if you poo only once or twice a week, you are most likely constipated, especially if the poo is hard)  It's not restricted to any age bracket, however as we get older (ie older adults), it seems to occur more often, some women seem to experience it more during pregnancy. Some infants switching to formula suffer it too. Some medical conditions predisposes one to it as well. SOURCES OF BELCHING AND FLATULENCE  Majorly the types of food  and drinks we consume can cause us to belch and fart more or do them in excess.  Certain foods and drinks have a higher tendency to cause farting and burping. Also some health conditions could cause one to burp and fart excessively. Fizzy/carbonated drinks as well as some types of alcoholic beverages have a high tendency to cause burping and flatulence.  Foods like beans and veggies like broccoli and cabbage cause excessive burping and flatulence. Most people can totally relate about the effect of beans and groundnuts on their farting pattern.  Chewing bubble gum, sucking on lollipops and top of pens, eating too quickly and smoking are some habits that encourage swallowing of air and can increase tendency to burp and fart. EXCESSIVE BURPING AND FLATULENCE  We have earlier mentioned that gas can build up in our bodies either by the digestion process or by swallowing air. The gas is released from our bodies basically through 2 ways: - Flatulence, also referred to as passing wind, farting or having gas, which is done via the anus - Burping, also referred to as belching, which is done via the mouth These 2 processes are completely normal and happen several times during the day. Curtains drop on bloating

So we are drawing the curtains down on bloating today to start off the next topic. Let's briefly mention how gas is generated in the body: i) as a result of the digestion process, so it's actually a byproduct of the digestion process.  ii) swallowing air from certain activities e.g. eating, drinking (especially with a straw), chewing bubble gum, smoking..... Now, it is of course perfectly normal for us let out the gas via farting or belching. Normally,we can pass out the gas  up to 10 times daily, some people can do this up to 20 times even, depending on the type of foods eaten or activities done.  Also certain GIT conditions make one more prone to passing out gas more frequently.  Holding in gas isn't good!
