Obesity is excessive accumulation of fat It is rare for someone to set out to be obese and most people who are obese find it difficult to get rid of the excess fatπŸ˜” Obesity is more than a cosmetic issue as it has health implications  It increases one's risks to all sorts of health challenges e.g. heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, digestive issues, osteoarthritis.... It can be heredity, can be caused by diet, physical inactivity, environmental or physiological causes A simple way to gauge obesity is to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI) BMI = Weight (kg)/Height (m)² Weight in kg divided by Height in m (squared) If value is above 30, then the person is obese Grab a bathroom scale and a measuring tape and know your status  Healthy values should be in the range of 18.5-29.9 The theme for this year is "Everybody Needs to Act" Health care professionals, policy makers, family members, friends, employers, peop

World Birth Defects Day

Today is World Birth Defects Day! It's all about shining some light on  -birth defects -how to reduce or prevent birth defects  Birth defects are present at birth and are basically structural changes that affect the way baby looks or functions. It can affect any part of the body. Many birth defects can be prevented, it is therefore important that intending mothers and pregnant women live healthy lives and make healthy choices, as these could greatly reduce the chance of having babies with defects. To prevent birth defects, intending mothers and pregnant women should ensure  -they get a continous healthy dose of folic acid (before and during pregnancy) -regular prenatal visits are a must -stay away from alcohol  -stay away from street or illicit drugs  -stay healthy (no infections and manage health conditions) -don't take any meds without getting a go-ahead from the HCP (HealthCareProvider) There are indeed many birth defects, but let's speak with 1 voice to kick

Losing one's sense of hearing is sad and worse even when it could have been prevented  Some types of loss of hearing can be prevented by safe listening, not subjecting our ears to dangerous levels of noise/sound Today is World hearing Day and its all about promoting awareness on hearing loss and safe listening  Loss of hearing can occur from -accidents that injure structures in the ears -aging -noise exposures from work or recreational places -illnesses -medications  -heredity The theme for this year is "To Hear for Life, Listen with Care" Simply put, if you do not want to lose your sense of hearing over time, ensure you take care of ears by not subjecting them to unsafe noise.  Loss of hearing could occur gradually over time Continous exposure to high levels of noise at parties, clubs, places of worship and work places poses a threat to loss of hearing Listen with care.  #WHD2022 #worldhearingday  #hearingcare  #safelistening  #TheFABS #TheFirstAi

It is crucially important to arrest a bleed, whether it's a minor or major. To stop an external bleed, apply firm pressure on the source of bleeding with a clean cloth (preferably lint-free). If you are helping stop a bleed on someone other than yourself,  then ensure you wear gloves, as it protects you and the person you are helping.
