How to avoid getting stung

Image
HOW TO PREVENT A STING  Most stings occur outdoors, especially where there is a lot of vegetation, bushes, parks with flowers or where molehills are. People who have to be in the bushes or vegetative areas should take cautionary measures as they are most exposed to stings. Students who go for excursions where there is abundant vegetation are also at risks of getting stung The tips we put out here would be of great help. #Stings #Bumblebees #Hornets  #YellowJackets #Wasps #FireAnts #HoneyBees #Scorpions #PreventingASting #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Reasons why you need to make a hospital visit for a sting

Image
WHEN IS A STING AN EMERGENCY AND NEEDS A HOSPITAL VISIT? Sometimes even after administering first aid care, a visit to the doctor's office is still neccessary because more expert care is needed to manage the venom or manage the victim. A sting has the potential to be fatal and so chances must not be taken. Take note of the outlined scenarios that necessitates a doctor visit. #Stings #HoneyBees #Bumblebees #Hornets #Wasps #FireAnts #Scorpions #YellowJackets #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

Anaphylaxis

Image
ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK- signs & symptoms  Anaphylaxis simply put is allergic reaction that is life threatening.  It can be caused by the venom injected into the victim of a sting or bite e.g sting from a bee or scorpion or bite from a snake. It can be caused by certain foods e.g peanuts, seafoods etc. Some meds can also cause anaphylaxis e.g. sulphur containing meds,  penicillin etc. Irrespective of the source, epinephrine auto-injector saves the day. In the picture below, we have info on the signs and symptoms of an anaphylactic shock.  If someone is stung by any stinging animal, do not waste any time to seek medical help as events can rapidly take a down turn if proper medical help isn't accessed.  However if an epinephrine auto-injector is available then it should be administered immediately.  If the victim becomes unconscious and stops breathing, immediate commence CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) #Stings #Anaphylaxis  #epinephrine  #Adrenaline #epinephrineinject

A sad case of a swarm bee stings

Image
Some deaths are absolutely avoidable.  Stings from bees can cause an anaphylactic shock that can become fatal. On the 11th of April  2019, i read from Premiumtimesng.com about a senior officer of the Nigeria Custom Service that was attacked while on duty by a swarm of bees, he was stung, obviously multiple times. My strong suspicion is that he suffered an anaphylactic shock which led to his death. Not everyone will experience an anaphylactic shock when stung by  a bee or a swarm of bees. An anaphylactic shock is a severe form of an allergic reaction that affects the whole body and can lead to death. Venom from certain animals, some types of food, certain meds etc. can cause it.  It is important we know the signs and symptoms of anaphylactic shock so we can take the appropriate steps. The panacea for anaphylactic shock is an epinephrine (adrenaline) auto-injector. *Watch this space, shortly we would give you the 411 on anaphylactic shock #Stings #BeeSting #AnaphylacticShock

To Do and Not To Do

WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN IT COMES TO STINGS Here are a few things we must do and then must not do with regards to caring for someone who has been stung. Remember that in first aid care, we must not cause further harm #Stings #HoneyBees #Bumblebees #Hornets #Wasps #Scorpions #FireAnts #YellowJackets #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

How to Prevent a Stroke

Do you have any idea on how to stop a stroke from happening to you???🤔🤔🤔 WAYS TO HELP YOU KEEP A STROKE AT BAY  Thanks to the World Stroke Organization (WSO) for putting together these info that are easy to understand and i guess, even easier to follow😉😉😉 #WorldStrokeDay2020 #jointhemovement #WorldStrokeOrganization #HowToPreventAStroke #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS

World Stroke Day 2020

Image
WORLD STROKE DAY (WSD) 2020 Today is World Stroke Day Awareness of stroke and how to spot the early warning signs of stroke are important A stroke is a medical emergency and occurs as a result of an interruption, reduction or deprivation of blood flow to the brain which causes its damage. When brain cells are deprived of blood, they become starved of oxygen and nutrients which causes their death! There is need for prompt response. This year we are being encouraged to ditch the sedentary lifestyle and get our MOVEMENTS  on, we need to dance, go for brisk walks, engage in aerobics.  We are aware that the Covid 19 lockdown might have encouraged us to be couch potatoes but that puts us in a danger zone.  Signs & Symptoms SPOT A STROKE F.A.S.T FACE Drooping- Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. If they cannot, a stroke is likely. ARM Weakness- Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? If they c

How to remove a stinger

Image
HOW TO SAFELY REMOVE A STINGER  If a stinging animal has left behind the stinger, there is a safe way to effectively dislodge it.  It's a no-no to use a pair of tweezers, it is not effective to use the fingers, the reason is that if these methods are used, the stinger will inject more venom into the victim.  Effective and safe ways to dislodge the stinger will be to use a blunt or dull knife (table knife or the blunt side of a kitchen knife) or use the edge of an ATM card or a credit/debit card. If these are not readily available, long finger nails can get the job done or a ruler. Here are the steps to dislodge a stinger effectively  - Place the edge of the card or knife against the skin next to the stuck stinger - Use constant firm pressure across the skin surface and the stinger This motion will push the stinger out of the skin without injecting more venom into the wound.  Below are "how-to" pictures to help you better understand the

FIRST AID CARE FOR STINGS

Image
Would you know what to do when you get stung? Would you know what to do if you witness someone get a sting? FIRST AID CARE FOR STINGS  We have established that stinging animals inject venom into their victims when they sting, and the injected venom cause effects on the victims.  Sometimes,  the venom is strong enough to kill, at other times, the venom cause illnesses and there are situations that the venom cause a mere irritation that eases out with time. Sometimes the venom triggers an allergic reaction at other times they could cause an anaphylactic shock, which could lead to death! Though different stinging animals require slightly different approaches, here, we are outlining a general first aid care to manage stings. Step1: Keep the patient as still as possible  Step 2: Remove jewelry in case swelling at the site of the sting occurs  Step 3: Remove the stinger, if present (remember that not all stinging animals leave behind a stinger) Step 4: Wash the affected area with

STINGERS

Image
STINGERS WITH BARBS AND STINGERS WITHOUT BARBS Stinging animals are able to sting with organs that they possess,  these organs are referred to as stingers or stings. The stingers are usually located at the rear of the stinging animal. Some stingers have barbs while others do not have barbs. Those with barbs most of the time sting once and leave their stingers behind, stuck at the site of the sting. Those without barbs, can sting multiple times. So let us not be under any illusion that when there is an attack from bees, hornets, wasps etc. that the attack is from their mouth parts, no, the stings are actually from the rear and not the front as is experienced with insect bites. #Stings #Stingers #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS  Photo source:@beeplaza.com.au

Signs and symptoms of a sting

Image
SINGS & SYMPTOMS OF A STING  The signs and symptoms of a sting presentation are different depending on the stinging agent. The injected venom is the cause of the signs and symptoms experienced by the victim. However there are signs and symptoms that are general. These have been listed here. Some stings can occur multiple times by the same stinging agent e.g. bumblebees, yellow jackets, wasps etc while other stinging agents e.g. honeybees, fire ants, scorpions etc sting just once. Sometimes the stinger/sting of the stinging agent is left behind at the site after stinging the victim. An anaphylactic shock is the worst result of a sting as it can cause fatality.  #Stings #Stinger #Bees #YellowJacket #Wasp #Hornet #Scorpions #FireAnts #AnaphylacticShock #TheFABS  #BeFABulouS
