How to remove a stinger

HOW TO SAFELY REMOVE A STINGER

If a stinging animal has left behind the stinger, there is a safe way to effectively dislodge it.

It's a no-no to use a pair of tweezers, it is not effective to use the fingers, the reason is that if these methods are used, the stinger will inject more venom into the victim.

Effective and safe ways to dislodge the stinger will be to use a blunt or dull knife (table knife or the blunt side of a kitchen knife) or use the edge of an ATM card or a credit/debit card.

If these are not readily available, long finger nails can get the job done or a ruler.

Here are the steps to dislodge a stinger effectively

- Place the edge of the card or knife against the skin next to the stuck stinger

- Use constant firm pressure across the skin surface and the stinger

This motion will push the stinger out of the skin without injecting more venom into the wound.
