World Stroke Day 2020

WORLD STROKE DAY (WSD) 2020

Today is World Stroke Day

Awareness of stroke and how to spot the early warning signs of stroke are important

A stroke is a medical emergency and occurs as a result of an interruption, reduction or deprivation of blood flow to the brain which causes its damage. When brain cells are deprived of blood, they become starved of oxygen and nutrients which causes their death! There is need for prompt response.

This year we are being encouraged to ditch the sedentary lifestyle and get our MOVEMENTS  on, we need to dance, go for brisk walks, engage in aerobics.

We are aware that the Covid 19 lockdown might have encouraged us to be couch potatoes but that puts us in a danger zone.

Signs & Symptoms
SPOT A STROKE F.A.S.T
FACE Drooping- Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. If they cannot, a stroke is likely.
ARM Weakness- Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? If they cannot, a stroke is likely.
SPEECH Difficulty- Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like "the sky is blue." Is the sentence repeated correctly?
TIME to call EMS- If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call EMS and get them to the hospital immediately.

Treatment
Prompt intervention reduces brain damage and potential complications. Stroke victims have better outcomes and possibly no signs of the aftermath of a stroke if they can get medical expert care as soon as possible, as they have access to certain medications and expert care.

The longer it takes to get help, the higher the risk to more damage and disability.
