Ear Wax Impaction

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT EAR WAX HAS BECOME A FOREIGN OBJECT IN THE EAR

Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance that is found in the ear canal. It's function is to keep the ear healthy, it does this by trapping dirt and dust so they don't travel further and cause problems.

The act of using cotton buds or bird feathers to "clean" the ears (removing ear wax) is not a safe practice. This action actually pushes some ear wax further down the ear canal.

Over time, ear wax can be impacted (becomes pressed firmly together), this then forms a hard mass of ear wax in the ear canal.

The signs and symptoms that ear wax has impacted in the ear canal are:

-difficulty in hearing
-a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
-dizziness
-nausea and vomiting
-unsteadiness while walking

Watch out for these signs and symptoms especially if you are in the habit of "cleaning" your ears.
