Heartburn

HEARTBURN

Most people are familiar with the term "Heartburn".

Heartburn of cause doesn't mean the heart is burning 😝. But it sure feels like something is burning!

Heartburn is a burning sensation that is painful and/or uncomfortable. It is felt in the upper and/or middle area of the chest or even upper part of the stomach. The pain can sometimes radiate to the neck/throat, jaw or arms. Sometimes the mouth would taste bitter.

The pain is usually worse after a (heavy) meal, when you are lying down or bending over.

It could last for minutes or even hours. It isn't usually a big deal that requires a visit to the hospital. Lifestyle changes, home remedies and OTC meds are usually adequate in its management.

So this is what causes a heartburn. In the digestion process, there are acids that are in the tummy that help in food digestion. If the acids(from the tummy) back up into the oesophagus (the tube that carries food from the mouth to the tummy), it causes this burning sensation.

People more prone to heartburn are
-obese people
-smokers
-pregnant women
