COMPLACENCY, THE REASON FOR MOST FIRE ACCIDENTS IN NIGERIA. (OPINION)

This was a video of the gas explosion at Magodo as reported by Channels TV. This happened about 3 weeks ago . From what was said by the fire service official, the fire was caused by a smoking car who refused to listen to instruction that was being given out by their officials. This has now led to the loss of lives, properties and the suspension  of a business. There was also a story last year of a lady who died after an explosion at an LPG filling station at Osogbo, Osun state. The reason for the explosion was that she answered a call at the LPG station.

The real reason for the cause of these fire accidents, if you ask me, is COMPLACENCY. You are driving and you notice fire service officials and their fire truck  racing , you chose to continue on your journey and ignore their warnings to make way or you get to an LPG filling station or Gas station where there are warning signs stating "DON'T MAKE CALLS", "SWITCH OFF YOUR ENGINE" but yet you chose to ignore these signs.Or you take a lamp or phone near an open jerrycan of gasoline  or generator and you believe nothing will happen to you. We must be a funny set of people. We need to be more cautious about fire accident triggers.Faulty wiring, leakages from gas cylinders, dangers from radiation from phones. It is indeed better to be safe than sorry.  Below is a video of what gas explosion can do to a house.

Safety Tip:
  1. When you enter your home/kitchen, take a deep breath to catch the possible smell of rotten egg which would indicate gas leakage.
  2. If you have kids in the house, always check your gas cooker to see if it has been mistakenly turned on before attempting to light your cooker.
  3. Check your gas pipe to ensure there no source of leakage. You could do this by pouring soapy water on the pipe so that you can identify any point of leakage. If you see bubbles, you have to turn off the your gas cylinder and go buy a new pipe before using your gas cooker.
  4. If you perceive the rotten egg at night, don't light a matchstick or turn on the light bulb. Get a touch light (not your phone's touch light) and use it to turn off your gas cylinder.
  5. Open all windows and doors to ensure that the gas fumes can get out of your house.
  6. If you are in a public place, watch out the fire service officials (you don't see them always on the street) and safety signs. They are there to protect you.
