If you are participating in the marathon, how prepared are you? Are you a first timer or a regular? Whatever your your marathon status, you need to "be prepared",just like the boys scout.
The preparation has probably been going on for months, weeks. days.... I guess you have prepared physically, with all the training,prepared psychologically, prepared mentally........
Have you prepared yourself medically? Are you aware of some of the most frequently occurring medical emergencies that could happen during a marathon?
So here's a heads-up: Medical emergencies do occur, and they do so mostly unannounced. Engaging in a marathon could expose you to them. But if you are prepared , then you are covered. The medical emergencies very from mild to severe. Information on what to do is important. Here is a list of things that could happen (this is not an exhaustive list though):
- Heat exhaustion
- Muscle cramp
- Blistering or chaffing
- Vomiting
- Dehydration
- Knee joint injuries
- Nipple bleeding
- Rectal bleeding
- Hypothermia
- Hyperthermia
- Ankle sprains
Just in case any of these happens, what to do!?
I am certain that the paramedics will be on ground however getting info for yourself is highly recommended.

FIRST AID KIT
Your first aid should have:
- Pain killers, antiseptic wipes, plasters, bandages, CPR mask, analgesic gel,ORS, water, vaseline, alcohol wipes,
- COMFORTABLE RUNNING SHOES
- BREATHABLE, BRIGHTLY COLOURED RUNNING OUTFITS
- KINESIOLOGY TAPES
- SUNGLASSESS
Be prepared. Run for great health. Run for fun. Run for the prize. Run to tick this off your bucket list. Whatever your reason(s) for doing the marathon, be safe always.
