FIRE SAFETY TIP: YOUR FIRE EXIT PLAN
A family of four staying at No. 13, Buraimoh street, Bariga area of Lagos State, Nigeria, lost their lives on the 6th of December, 2017 as a result of a fire accident at their home. The actual cause of the fire was not reported but the assumptions stated that the resultant causes could have been an electrical spark or candle. This was a very tragic news. But what caught my attention the most in the news report as reported by Vanguard Newspaper, was what the fire Chief said. He said:
"Members of the family should always know the exits of their apartment whenever there is an emergency"
What is your exit plan at your home in case of an emergency? We live in a society where it is a norm to have burglary proof as the first step for home security. It is good to have these as a deterrent to burglars but would the burglary proof hinder the chance of rescue in case of an emergency? In the case of the family that lost their lives, despite the arrival of the State Fire Service, they could't get to the family on time because of the burglary proof at their door.
Here are few tips that could save you when trapped during a fire outbreak at your home:
- Develop a fire exit plan.
- Ensure there are at least two ways out of your home and nothing obstructs the way out..
- Ensure you have a smoke detector.
- If you live in a duplex or a multi-leveled building, ensure you have a rope ladder.
- Ensure you have a designated place where the house key is kept and everyone know where it is.
- A strong hammer would come in handy to knock out the window protectors (just in case).
- Do not stand in the smoke, lay on the floor or crawl to safety until help arrives as one is prone to carbon monoxide poisoning while standing.
- Ensure you have credit on your phone to call for help
- Try not to panic as we don't come up with the brightest ideas when we are in panic mode
- Be equipped with the appropriate fire extinguisher
The bottom line is simple, develop an exit plan that is simple for every one of your family members to understand.
