FIRST AID CARE FOR CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) POISONING

Once you come across a victim of CO poisoning, it is important act super fast especially if they are unconscious as every second counts

The aims of first aid care for casualties of CO poisoning are:
(i)To Restore Adequate Breathing
(ii) To get them to a hospital for more specialized care

These are the steps to take in administering first aid care

- Immediately move the person outside (where there is an abundance of fresh air), away from carbon monoxide area

But do not put yourself in danger by staying too long in the CO rich space, so you don't become a victim yourself

- If the person isn't breathing at all or not breathing normally, immediately perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) then send for help EMS or arrange to transport them to a hospital. Continue CPR until the casualty begins breathing or medical professional help is available

- Also ensure that you loosen any tight clothing, especially around the neck

- Turn off the source of the CO poisoning or take it out to the opening

- Open doors and windows so that the risk of others getting poisoned is eliminated

- If the casualty throws up, turn the head to the side, to prevent choking (this is done while they are laying on the ground)
