How does the body respond to choking

You know how we had earlier mentioned that there are 2 pipes in the throat? The trachea, for taking air from the nose and mouth to the lungs and then the oesophagus, for taking foods and drinks (liquids) from the mouth to the tummy.

Ok, so the trachea is averse to having anything that ain't air in it. If fluids or foods mistakenly gets into the trachea,  the body's reaction is to get it out ASAP, it does this by making us cough.

Coughing when foods and fluids get into the trachea is an attempt to rid the trachea of the foreign objects.

If someone is coughing because they are choking, we should let them cough, especially if they are able to cough forcefully, as they may be able to dislodge whatever has gotten into the trachea. It's only when the cough is weak or they can't cough at all that we can administer first aid intervention.
