World Day for Safety and Health at Work:Stay prepared

Yesterday was World Day for Safety and Health at Work and the theme was "Anticipate,  Prepare and Respond to Crisis:Invest Now in Resilient OSH Systems".

I am reminded of a sad event that occurred in 2016.

A beautiful 43 YO in the company of her kids and friend went to a telecom company (Airtel) in Lagos state. She had to register her SIM for her phone.

The protocol involved her getting a photo capture. She was asked by a staff to stand at a spot for the capture to be done. Unfortunately, the spot she stood on caved in! There was a sinkhole! One of her legs got trapped in the hole.

That leg not only got trapped but badly injured, the damage was so bad that she bled severely and even lost tissue. The place was tiled so you can only imagine the damage the broken sharp tiles would have caused. The injuries went from the ankle area all the way to her knee.

Now we know that if there is uncontrolled severe bleeding, survival chances begin to narrow

We know that first aid knowledge would have saved the day in such a situation

We know that HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) officers or first aiders would have definitely known what to do (preserving life and preventing a bad situation from getting worse)

We know that being prepared for a medical emergency (for both staff and clients) would have benefited the victim and the company (because laid down HSE procedures would have been followed)

We know that the availability of a first aid box/kit would have been of great benefit

Unfortunately, the response of Airtel was zilch. News has it that their first reaction was to bale out (fear and helplessness) and those that came back were clueless on how to help. Sympathizers eventually extricated her from the sinkhole (i can only imagine the method they used, probably caused more damage).

She was taken to a private hospital that rejected her (they couldn't manage the severity of the case)

Eventually, she was taken to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi for treatment but sadly passed on about a month later🥺🥺🥺

A beautiful soul gone. Her kids deprived of their mom.Hmmmmmmmm🥺🥺🥺

📌 Delayed medical care during a medical emergency has bad outcomes
📌 Being clueless about first aid interventions helps no one
📌 Not being prepped for medical emergencies always has terrible consequences on the day of a medical emergency
📌 Emergency Preparedness includes having first aid skills and first aid kit
