International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

Today is International Day of zero tolerance to female genital mutilation.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. This practice  violates the females rights to sexual and reproductive health, security and physical integrity, their right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and their right to life when the procedure results in death.

FGM or female circumcision is not only practised in Africa, but also in the Middle East,  Asia, Latin America and some other places. It is good to know the practice is dying gradually. So it's a continous struggle till it is completely stopped.

Girls who undergo female genital mutilation face short-term complications like severe pain, shock, excessive bleeding, infections, and difficulty in passing urine, as well as long-term consequences for their sexual and reproductive health and mental health.

We should all lend our voices against this deliberate inhumane practice.
