World Birth Defects Day 2021

Today is World Birth Defects Day!

It's all about shining some light on
-birth defects
-how to reduce or prevent birth defects
-how to take care of kids born with birth defects

Birth defects are present at birth and are basically structural changes that affect the way baby looks or functions. It can affect any part of the body.

Birth defects are a leading cause of deaths in infants and for those who survive it, can be a cause of longterm physical, functional and/or mental disabilities.

Many birth defects can be prevented, it is therefore important that intending mothers and pregnant women live healthy lives and make healthy choices, as these could greatly reduce the chance of having babies with defects.

Though the origin of some defects cannot be easily traced, healthy living and choices helps.

To prevent birth defects, intending mothers and pregnant women should ensure
-they get a continous healthy dose of folic acid (before and during pregnancy)
-regular prenatal visits are a must
-stay away from alcohol
-stay away from booze
-stay away from street or illicit drugs
-stay healthy (no infections and manage health conditions)
-don't take any meds without getting a go-ahead from the HCP (HealthCareProvider)

Incidences of Birth Defects can be massively reduced if we knew how to do better.

There are indeed many birth defects, but let's speak with 1 voice to kick them out
