Intro: foreign objects in the eye

INTRO: FOREIGN OBJECT IN THE EYE

A foreign object in the eye is any object that gets into the eye from outside of the body, they are alien to the body.

Foreign objects that have been found in the eye include dust particles, debris, eyelash, grit, shards of metal and glass etc. The eyes have a self cleansing mechanism, this is done by the rinsing or flushing action of tears produced in the eyes.

The problem with foreign objects in the eye is that they have the potential to damage the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye, and these are very delicate structures of the eye.

Foreign objects in the eye normally stay on the eyeball and can scratch the cornea, however in rare occasions they can penetrate the eyes and cause grave damage (these are referred to as intraocular objects)

Foreign objects in the eye cause discomfort and sometimes pain. The plan is to safely remove them without causing damage.
