World Tuberculosis Day 2021

Image
Tuberculosis aka TB is a bacterial infection that affects the lungs.  The bad news is that it is deadly 😔 The good news is that it is preventable and treatable 😁 It is contagious and spread by airborne droplets (like the Covid-19 virus) through coughing and sneezing  Classic signs and symptoms of TB👇 Cough that lasts for a long period (about 3 weeks and more) Coughing up blood  Chest pain (when breathing or coughing) Fever Tiredness  Weight loss Loss of appetite  TB is treated effectively with antibiotics, the treatment duration is usually a long one. Do not self diagnose or self manage. If you present with the signs and symptoms or at risk, you must see a HCP (Health Care Provider) Those who have TB  should prevent the spread by wearing a surgical facemask when around people  Early commencement of treatment is desirable for best outcomes. Let us end TB #WorldTuberculosisDay #TheClockIsTicking #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxSh...

Managing injuries

Image
WHEN TO USE COLD COMPRESS AND WHEN TO USE HOT COMPRESS When there is an injury a cold compress or hot compress can speed up the healing process and ease out the pain and help the injured feel better .Now the challenge is which to use and when to use. Cold compress or ice is the recommended treatment for acute injuries (that is one that has occurred within the last 48 hours). It is especially helpful to reduce swelling and control pain. Acute injuries are the result of sudden trauma, such as a fall or collision. Signs and symptoms of an acute injury may include pain, tenderness, redness, warm skin and swelling. Cold compress or ice is most effective when it is applied early and often for the first 48 hours.  Heat/hot/warm compress, on the other hand, increases circulation and raises skin temperature and is best used for chronic pains or injuries . Chronic injuries develop slowly because a body part is being overused or because an acute...

Is it a cold, flu or corona?

Image
So i have a cold🤧😔😪 We all know how a case of a cold can make you feel My family members and friends ask those Covid-19 questions 👇🤦‍♀️🤣 'Can you smell?" "Do you have a fever"? "How is your appetite?" "When did it start?" "Have you started taking zinc tabs" "Don't you think you should buy ivermectin"? "Ensure you take ginger and garlic" "What about azithromycin?" The questions and suggestions are endless 🤣🤣🤣 You know these are corona times and extra care has to be taken. It's hard for people to cough or clear their throats in peace, you'll just get those funny stares Thank God it's just an episode of a cold. #Covid-19  #Colds #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Thermometers are a must have

Image
It's no news that a thermometer is the most reliable instrument for checking temperature.  The normal body temperature is about 37⁰C The range for babies and children is  36.6-37.2⁰C The range for adults is 36.1-37.2⁰C A temperature increase above the normal range (fever) is indicative that there is some drama going on in the body. It should not be ignored and of course a thermometer is the best instrument to give that info. Fevers in babies and kids, if not put in check can lead to a couple of complications e.g seizures.  So it's important that your first aid kit should have a thermometer, especially if there are babies and older kids that the first aid kit/box is catering for.  #Temperature  #BodyTemperature  #Thermometers #FirstAid  #FirstAidKit ##FirstAidSavesLives  #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Checking temperature

Image
The baby has a bit of a fever i think 🤔 Hands to the rescue 🤲 What to do🤔 Feel baby's temperature with your hands, back of the palm or the palm?🤔🤔🤔 Quite a number of us are guilty of this.  Using the palms to check or gauge body temperature isn't best practice really, but in the absence of a thermometer, the back of the palm is the next best option. When we use the back of our palms to check for fevers, what might be a fever to Mr G might feel like normal temperature to Mrs G. Using a thermometer to assess body temperature is the more reliable route. #Temperature #BodyTemperature #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

How does the body respond to choking

Image
You know how we had earlier mentioned that there are 2 pipes in the throat? The trachea, for taking air from the nose and mouth to the lungs and then the oesophagus, for taking foods and drinks (liquids) from the mouth to the tummy.  Ok, so the trachea is averse to having anything that ain't air in it. If fluids or foods mistakenly gets into the trachea,  the body's reaction is to get it out ASAP, it does this by making us cough. Coughing when foods and fluids get into the trachea is an attempt to rid the trachea of the foreign objects. If someone is coughing because they are choking, we should let them cough, especially if they are able to cough forcefully, as they may be able to dislodge whatever has gotten into the trachea. It's only when the cough is weak or they can't cough at all that we can administer first aid intervention.  #Choking #FirstAid #FirstAidSavesLives #TheFABS  #TheFirstAidBoxShop  #BeFABulouS

Signs of choking

Image
Some years ago, on a lazy Saturday morning, i was at a friend's doing breakfast when i started choking on the yam and fish sauce 😭. Another friend was present when he noticed and gave me the first aid intervention that saved the day👏 Nasty scary experience 🤦‍♀️ Here's how to recognize choking in adults and kids👇 The classic sign of a choking person is that they would grab their throat (cause that is the area where the drama is happening) -ask them if they are choking  -they would find it hard to talk or might not be able to speak at all -they might be able to cough (might be strong or weak coughs) or might not be able to cough  at all  -they will look distressed  -there will be difficulty in breathing or not be able to breathe at all -they could eventually become unconscious  Here's how to recognize choking in infants 👇 - they might be able to cough or totally unable to  - they might be able to make some noise or not able to any sound at al...

Choking in infants & kids

Image
Anyone can be a victim of a choking episode, infants and kids are sadly not spared. They can choke when being breastfed! At times the foods we give them could be hazardous 😔😱🤔. When we are introducing semi-solids or solid forms of food to them, caution must be taken to ensure that the food bits are small enough not to cause them to choke. Pieces of sausages, nuts e.g. cashew nuts, peanut, popcorn, biscuits, slices of fruits, veggies etc. Even pasty forms of foods can cause them to choke (peanut butter, formulas ...), so they should be given in little portions.  We must discourage the from running around during meal times or when they snacking. Discourage them from talking, laughing and generally playing while eating. Discourage them from eating or drinking too fast. And of course keep an eye on them so it is spotted on time should a choking episode start. Why rapid intervention is required for a choking episode

Image
When someone is choking,  air (oxygen) is unable to get to the lungs! Often times,  the culprit is food. Yes food getting into the wrong pipe. Foods and other objects can partially block the trachea (mild choking) or completely block the trachea (severe choking) In adults choking is commonly caused by foods. In infants and children,  it could be foods (especially nuts, popcorn, pieces of sausages etc.), parts of toys, or small toys,  beads, buttons,  button batteries, pebbles etc. Choking is said to be amongst the leading cause of accidental deaths,  ranks around number 4. So imagine not getting air for a period 😱, death is almost certain.  The brain loves oxygen, it keeps it going No oxygen for 0-4 mins= brain damage may not occur  No oxygen for 4-6 mins=possibility of brain damage  No oxygen for 6-10 mins=brain damage is likely to occur  No oxygen for over 10 mins=brain death would almost definitely occur So time is of the...
