It is crucially important to arrest a bleed, whether it's a minor or major. To stop an external bleed, apply firm pressure on the source of bleeding with a clean cloth (preferably lint-free). If you are helping stop a bleed on someone other than yourself,  then ensure you wear gloves, as it protects you and the person you are helping.

Taking out splinters

Image
Splinters are small, no scratch that, they are tiny pieces of wood, glass, metals or even plastic that get embedded underneath the skin. Most common of them are splinters of wood. When they make their entry, the pain could be mild to severe, so at times you may not recall how they got in. You might begin to feel some pain or discomfort if they are left unattended to. It is important to take out a splinter asap as they can cause an infection at the site that they occupy A pair of tweezers are super useful in splinter removal. These are usually available in your first aid kit.  🎯sterilize the tweezers 🎯wash the area where the splinter is embedded (ensure your hands are clean as well) 🎯if a part of the splinter is sticking out and can be easily grasped with the tweezers, then pull out the splinter in the same direction it entered the skin The tricky bit is when the splinter is completely embedded 🤦‍♀️  Taking out the...

First Aid for Choking

Image
If an adult or a child starts choking, if they can cough, encourage them to. Coughing forcefully could help dislodge objects in the airway.  It is such a relief that there is a first aid intervention for most life threatening medical emergencies 👏👏👏 When coughing fails to dislodge an object from the airway then a first aid intervention must be applied.  For an adult or a child (not infant), this first aid intervention is called the "5 and 5" It is made up of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts (aka Heimlich maneuver) 5 and 5 is such a life saver as they can help dislodge the offensive obstacle in the airway so that normal breathing is restored.  This first aid skill is a must have, cause you never know when it will come in handy First Aid for Choking Photo Credit @mayoclinic #choking  #chokinginadults #chokinginchildren #chokingincident #firstaidforchoking #5and5 #abdominalthrusts  #backblows #backslaps #heimlichmaneuver...

FIRST AID: An essential guide that we should all know by heart

Image
Source:  dreamstime.com First Aid – Noun: help given to a sick or injured person until full medical treatment is available. You can make a huge difference to the outcome of an injury or illness by knowing the correct methods to preserve, and even help to save, a life. To remember how to administer the correct first aid steps in the presented conditions is difficult so it is paramount to have a certain level of training. Some situations rely on common sense, logic and using initiative to analyse the criteria involved. A knowledge of basic First Aid will give you the confidence you need to be able to provide assistance. Here is a simple step by step guide created by the Red Cross in case of an emergency. Keep it on you at all times, or better still, learn it by heart. Even better would be to get some training if you can. We run a diploma First Aid Course here at the School of Natural Health Sciences – please see the information at the end of this article. Five first aid ...

IIdentifying a choking individual

First aid for burns

Image
Feels like everyone has experienced a burn of some sorts at some in life. Could have been from moist heat or dry heat. If the kitchen is your space, then most def you would have had several burn accidents.  Depending on the depth of skin tissue affected,  the length of time the kin is exposed to the burn source, the extent or area of skin burned and the part of the body that gas been burned, burns can be described as first, second, third..... degree burn  Irrespective of the degree of the burn, the first and second step to take as first aid intervention is same 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙣. This is done by breaking contact with the source of the burn. (Instinctively we disconnect from burns ) 𝘾𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙣. Someone is unconscious? What to do

Image
A friend was involved in a ghastly motor accident some years ago, she was unconscious.  Those that came to rescue the victims put her amongst those they supposed were dead. Fortunately, after a while she moved and someone noticed and brought the attention of others that she was still alive.  Your guess is as good as mine if she didn't move. I shudder to think of how many people have gone to an early grave because help wasn't rendered because they were mistakenly written off as dead. If you should happen on someone who is unconscious, whether they have obvious injuries or not, here are steps to take in assessing their status Sometimes they are unconscious/unresponsive and breathing (they have fainted) or they are unconscious and not breathing (this doesn't mean they are dead and the situation irredeemable) Yo check for signs of life👇 𝙇𝙤𝙤𝙠 to see if the chest rises and falls 𝙇𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣 for sounds, to hear breathing  𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡 for breath from nose and/or...
